Mary Davis is best known for bringing the Special Olympics to Ireland in 2003, as the then Chief Executive of Special Olympics Ireland.
In 2004, she was appointed to the Council of State by President Mary McAleese, and is now seeking to succeed her in that office.
At a news conference this morning, Ms Davis is expected to confirm that she will be seeking the backing of four local authorities to allow her to contest the Presidential election as an Independent.
