Niall Mellon, “property developer and philanthropist”, was among those interviewed for the slickly-shot, terror-stricken Prime Time Namagedden special on RTE last night, fronted by Clark Kent Ian Kehoe
Sitting in Dublin airport (Terminal Two) Mellon was in surprisingly good form. Particularly for a guy who owes €300 million to Nama (or as Kehoe regularly reminded viewers: “YOU the taxpayer” – which at least gets most of the Broadsheet massive off the hook).
Three hundred million. Asked if anyone would ever see this money again Mellon made a funny face and said he would deal with NAMA on the “niggedly end”
He was more forthcoming about the little-reported caring side of property developers and how Fianna Fail helped give his profession a bad name.
What is important here is an abosloute determination from property development companies to do the best we can to repay as much of these loans as is possible notwithstanding the large scale systemic collapse of our Irish banking system.
I believe at this point that NAMA realise property development companies are decent people and I think a lot of the stigma came from the urgency of the Fianna Fail government to blame everyone except themselves. they jumped on to the television and radio to blame property developers for the demise of the banking system.
Oh-kay.
And this was where where Bodger was forced to slump back in his beanbag and simply sigh, spilling a can of Tizer all over his shorts.
“And people mightn’t look upon it this way, but the property developing companies are every much victims as, indeed, are all the thousands of people who are in negative equity.”
