Perishing drug-addled, dance-crazed tykes.

Rachel Mathews-McKay, co-oordinator of Future Matters, the youth & community network group in the Seanad Reform campaign. writes:

This week at ‘Against the Grain’, Dublin marked the official start of a radical campaign. Radical because we ‘re a non-partisan, diverse, mixed background group of young people.

We’re energised and enthusiastic about about being heard, being counted and we’re stepping up to the politicians and political spin doctors who have never rated young, community driven voices interested in shaping, re shaping and reforming the mechanisms of power for us, the future of Ireland.

The Seanad Reform debate is far from over and abolition isn’t a full-drawn conclusion, but people need to be ready, willing and able to tell the Government that it won’t just roll over for its ‘pulled out of the sky’ and ill-conceived plans. Especially not ones that would damage democracy, silence independent voices and tighten the Dail whip.

Seanad Reform makes more sense both ideologically, democratically and even financially, a real debate will prove that.
