A company of developer Johnny Ronan has won its Supreme Court appeal against a ruling the €1.46 million annual rent for Bewley’s Cafe on Grafton Street must be allowed fall to reflect market rates. The end result of the various provisions of the lease was an “upwards only” review effect notwithstanding it was not expressed in those terms.

The Government was defeated in the Seanad yesterday in a vote on a Private Members’ Bill to end upward-only rent reviews. The Independents who voted against the Government included five of the Taoiseach’s nominees: Fiach Mac Conghail, Marie-Louise O’Donnell, Mary Ann O’Brien, Jillian van Turnhout and Katherine Zappone.
