Denis.
And why he doesn’t need to own the Irish Times.
‘Cantillion’ writes:
“The deal might appeal to O’Brien for other reasons. The [Grand Canal] theatre is one of the best modern buildings in Ireland. It would be a shame to see it lost to the State until its lease runs out in 2207 if it was acquired by an international buyer.
O’Brien is a fan of good architecture so he can also appreciate its aesthetic value. The talented Seán Billings, who died in 2012, was facade consultant on the theatre’s remarkable visage and on O’Brien’s notable Digicel headquarters in Jamaica.
O’Brien is at his peak in business terms for the next few decades but perhaps he is thinking even further ahead by bidding for the theatre. It is a good business to own but it would be an incredible asset to ultimately bequest to the State. It would be quite the final act if the billionaire was so minded.”
Really?
*attempts to uncurl toes*
A new player appears in theatre-land (Irish Times)
(Photocall Ireland)
Ah jaysus. What’s wrong with that? “He’s a fan of architecture”?
Yep, they’re in his pocket alright.
You people would be well served to actually read the Irish Times every now and again and learn what journalism actually is. Until then, stick to posting YouTube videos that went viral a year ago and the occasional pic of a nice sunset. Good lads.
The Old Lady doth protest too much, methinks…
Especially young people taking up Auctioneering and Valuation places at DIT through the CAO this week, absolutely!
Maybe Denis will put ‘some manners’ on us?
I’d say it’s only a matter of time.
Denis is probably sitting at home now, thinking, “you know what’s missing from my media empire? A low-budget blog run by some anonymous students who don’t write anything themselves and have no concept of editorial standards, but just re-post a load of content created by other people and then stick “Anyone?” at the bottom.”
Get ready for the big payout lads!
No, Denis is probably sitting at home now with his feet up on Conor, thinking he might buy a declining, morally-corrupt mouthpiece for the elite, to add to his other declining, morally-corrupt mouthpieces for the elite. “Conor! Help me build my EMPIRE! “Yes, MASTER!”
zing!
Read The Irish Times! What journalism really is! Hahahahahahahahahaha! That’s a cracker.
You people! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I regularly read the IT and I’m sad to say the standard is steadily sinking.
What am I missing ?
Both statements appear to be truths……do we just have to hate O’Brien and everything written about him BS ?
The problem I would have with the article is that they’re clearly licking his hole!
“It would be a shame to see it lost to the State until its lease runs out in 2207” ….I don’t think Joe Punter would notice in fairness…. or am I wrong?
Why is there no author on that piece in the IT? :)
It’s in the ‘Cantillon’ column in the printed version.
is the State taking proceedings against O’Brien for his dealings with Lowry? Are any of the bidders taking O’Brien to court?
It would be a shame to see it lost to the State until its lease runs out in 2207…….Is a good business to own but it would be an incredible asset to ultimately bequest to the State. It would be quite the final act if the billionaire was so minded.”
State gets it due to bankruptcy bad. State gets it because DOB lets them good?
Your …’s were important to the meaning :-)
“lost to the State” as in the state would have lost it to foreign investors.
“Quite the final act…” well that heavily depends on what acts occur in the interim, it could be largely meaningless, or fantastically grotesque.
.
If the billionaire WERE so minded.
if the billionairewere so minded!!

Here are the motives behind the Cantillon piece
St. Fintan O’Toole has written 2 articles on the BGE Theatre – first one was totally pro-Harrry Crosbie – and he got slapped down by the IT Business Section who wrote a piece outlining Crosbie’s *cough* issues at the High Court.
Next, Fintan writes a pro “New Beginning” article which was completely flakey and one sided (crowd-funding lark) – this is the Business lads marking their territory
Denis doesn’t look well in that photo, he has a little too much rosy ness in his cheeks a heart problem maybe???
So if he buys it, would Denis be playing the evil queen or the fairy godmother in this years panto? I hear he’s got Tony O’Reilly to play the part of Buttons.
I wonder if he owned the theatre would he get somebody to edit any plays about him.
The IT editor has that job already.
Denis might use it as his office, the accoustics would provide good amplification for him to practise his evil laugh, sending the swans scattering across the canal out into the Irish Sea for added dramatic effect. “mmmmwwaahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! *cough* hello Denis O’Briens office, Denis speaking…”
The Grand Canal Threatre really isn’t that impressive and it’s not very well finished. Attention to the finer details was jettisoned in favour of getting it ready before it should have been.
Disagree except for the roof.
The crinkly tin roof was a cost saving too far.
A fan of good architecture? So that’s why he’s knocked down the hideous Canada House on Stephen’s Green to replace it with an almost identical monstrosity? Yeah, big fan I’m sure.
A wasted opportunity, for sure.
Hope he doesn’t mind knocking it again in thirty years.
This comment is typical of so much of the lazy, half-backed engagement with architecture in this country.
Stop making so much sense; it’s inconvenient
You bequeath something not bequest it. Although in the strictest sense real estate is “devised” not “bequeathed”. But god, the tone of this article! The Irish Times is (for the most part) total cräp these days. How they think resurrecting the paywall is going to help them I have no idea.
we’re not allowed to like rich people in suits
AHAHAHAHAHAHA! You, sir/madam, are obtuse!
I wonder how long it will be before I read the obituary of The Irish Times in The Irish Independent….
Every pantomime has a clown as Conor has just shown…
