Rosetta.
A computer rendering of a comet the European Space Agency wish to land a probe on that looks a bit like Ireland.

Exciting day. Good luck all.
The Guardian have a live blog worth following; http://www.theguardian.com/science/across-the-universe/live/2014/nov/12/rosetta-comet-landing-live-blog
Thanks for the link.
Live stream from ESA control room here

Thanks munk. I think that one is incorporated into the Guardian live stream but the latter are adding information snippets and factuals during non-activity.
Well did it land or not?
Not yet, it’s in freefall towards the comet’s surface at the moment.
We should know by 4, although landing will take place around 3:30
Thanks.
who/what took the photo??
…selfie stick.
Heh :)
Due to land at 15.30. The photo is an artist rendering. The comet looks like a duck not Ireland.
Or possibly Ireland without Kerry, so a much improved/bereft Ireland (delete as per own particular prejudice). Anyway, BBC radio said this morning the rock is the shape of a rubber duck. A rubber duck that just happens to be the shape of Ireland without Kerry, I say. And possibly missing a bit of south Tipp also.
XKCD is doing a nice summary :D

Looks like Ireland, minus most of Munster.
The photograph the Philae lander took on detachment from Rosetta has been received. At half a billion kilometers away, a transmission from the spacecraft takes about 30 minutes to reach Earth.

The photo has poor detail due to facing into the sun and being taken from a rotating lander. The image will be cleaned up later. The overexposed sun can be seen to the left, Rosetta’s solar panels in the centre top, and Rosetta’s body in the top right. Lens flare everywhere else.
The first images of the Philae lander from Rosetta have been received:

Aw sweet!
Two Irish companies involved with this too. Space Technology Ireland Ltd (Stil) and Captec.
