Powerful addition to the debate. Where in the midst of all this does life actually begin? Conception? No. Birth? No. So somewhere in the middle then?

Exactly. Its actual life begins when it’s born. It can survive outside the womb at around 26 weeks, so that’s another marker. Before that? Who knows. I suppose it all just depends on your beliefs/morality.

23 weeks is the generally accepted age that babies are likely to survive. They usually have very significant developmental issues but they survive. Zero children in the history of humanity have survived unaided after birth but, even with modern equipment and medicine, premature babies are not likely to survive if born prior to 23 weeks. Medical science is making it possible for babies to “survive” but there is an ethical question over whether the likely physical and mental consequences outweigh the desire to keep a premature baby alive.

But is surviving with often massive disabilities surviving? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Well, it’s called “how to build a human”. You’re looking at the wrong chart, buddy.

Well in some cases it aborts itself. Scraps production – stops the press – fault in the machinery.

Apparently the womb can reject wonky embryos at the very beginning as well: they don’t know how that happens but it does.
