The launch of World Book Day (which takes place tomorrow) an initiative ‘to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading’.

Authors Shane Hegarty (Darkmouth); Derek Landy (Skullduggery Pleasant) and David O’Doherty (Danger Is Everywhere) joined a flock of Educate Together bookworm tearaways in Trinity Hall, Trinity College, Dublin

    It could be tokenism or it could be that a lot of upwardly-mobile new immigrants push their kids into such book programmes (and other extra-curricular activities) to raise their education levels and hopefully later thier opportunities, while the while Irish kids of similar economic back-grounds are playing xBox after school on the family widescreen TV half the size of their parent’s tiny living rooms.
