      +1

The great O2 shop in Rathmines seems to have gone (not sure when); there was a lovely Indian or Pakistani guy in there who was really kind and helpful to non-techies.

Mind you, unions seem to have drifted away from being the defenders of workers’ rights.

I’ll give you a hint- they are in ‘business’ to make money, not sustain community. The unfortunate thing about publicly traded companies is. Ones that trade shares on a public stock market- they always are under pressure to be making more than they did the quarter before. This then installs a culture that the company always has to be trimming every little ounce of fat. And there is no other way to put it mate, the shops that you talk about have been deemed fat by the O2/3 powers that be.
I’m a little surprised at your shock that they are “ruthless and money hungry”

Mm. Are shareholders so ruthless and greedy that they want a business model that throws people out of work to pay them a few cents extra?

      1. Sam

Yes. Especially when some of the shareholders are not people, but investment funds, run by fund managers whose entire job is to squeeze more out of each investment.

How very naive. Business and financial investors are ruthless enough to start wars resulting in thousands of deaths for profit. Don’t be so shocked by the closing of a few stores.

No. Never stop being shocked at their behaviour. That way lies apathy and acceptance. There’s enough of that around as it is.

Why does she have a question mark after jobs? Being pedantic here but the over-use of question marks, when not actually asking a question, is a pet hate of mine.

Rant aside, the lack of notice is a valid complaint. The shop closure is a harsh reality.

Not only does she have a question mark. She misguidedly highlights the mistake by stating that she has a question, when she clearly has not. Let’s fire up the stake.

(more seriously, sympathies on the job losses!)

It’s a bit like Tesco announcing new jobs (while ignoring the larger number of people in local, smaller shops that’ll be made redundant as a result of Tesco moving in)

Totally out of order for 3 to behave like this – corporate responsibility my a*se

  4. Miko

Meh. What did she think would happen? Keep all the stores? Plus this sounds like it was a franchise and she was not directly employed by three.
As for businesses being ruthless – given Irish consumers demand for ever cheaper goods and services you absolutely see consumers choose different stores or services to save a few cent. But that’s ok right?

The irony of the post to Three is there were a lot of staff you did want to get redundancy. Coming from the O2 side and seeing how Three management operated not just towards their staff but towards customers and not to mention their absolutely crap systems in place, not just myself but a large proportion of my colleagues would have happily taken redundancy and jumped ship.
I fully appreciate the need the lay off staff when a merger happens, but the comments about them making profits are misguided, three Ireland don’t make profits, up to now they’ve been getting bailed out by the profitable parent company keeping three’s head above water. The whole idea of buying O2 Ireland was they could buy a profitable company and make themselves profitable, although talking to a lot of (previously) O2 customers since the rebrand took place, the vast majority of them are actively looking at leaving the network once their contracts are up.

If their reputation for bad customer service is anything to go by, they match that with their attitude to employee’s to the point where most of the staff are looking for new jobs also. I could go on a rant about how crap a company are but as an employee I’m somewhat expected to bot be negative towards them so I’ll not say too much

If her boss owns the shops, surely it’s a franchise store so shouldn’t she be having a rant at him??

I really hate to hear news like this. Especially from a company that I suppose I technically support from my monthly 3 bill. Very bad form of 3 to do this. How can a company treat individual stores/staff like this after these stores/staff presumably made good profits for the company and assisted their growth in the Irish Market giving them the name/ability/track record to be considered a contender for the O2 group – Shame on you 3
