John Kelly meets JP Donleavy on The Works on RTÉ One this evening.
The interview, at the writer’s home at Lough Owel, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Ginger Man which has sold 45 million copies worldwide and has never been out of print since 1955.
Fair play, in fairness..

…his subsequent books were dreadful but I’m sure he sold loads on the back of The Ginger Man.
I loved The Unexpurgated Code. Still makes me laugh out loud.
An extremely harsh comment and untrue! The Singular Man is an exceptional novel and his musings on Ireland In All Her Sins And I Some Of Her Graces, Ireland A Singular Country and the collection An Author And His Image are perceptive, elegant and funny. The Unexpurgated Code is humorous and full of black comedy; and the later works still display Donleavy’s lyrical style and mordant humour. A great writer.
The Ginger Man itself wasn’t up to much. Strictly one for American tourists visiting Dublin
A Singular Man.
never read it….must rectify that soon!
+1
And fair play on RTE for the program!
I read it years ago and couldn’t figure out why it was banned. Sure, his boastful claims caught up with him in the jaws of a fox but if anything that was just a “pride before a fall morality” tale.
Must read it again and see if it scandalises me this time.
The destinies of darcy dancer gentleman – great book. Filthy!
