bono

Jay Z started his career dealing crack in the Brooklyn ghetto before he broke through as a musician. Bono’s family struggled under religious segregation in Ireland. Depp grew up in and out of Kentucky motels, scared, learning the meaning of hard work by sitting up with his waitress mother to count her tips.

    Ha! Good point, well made.
Bob Geldof is inclined to wang on about his poor childhood in Ireland: the poor pet’s Dad could only afford to send him to Blackrock College. Dunno what those people in famine-ravaged Ethiopia were complaining about. They didn’t know true poverty like ole Bob.

I’d be willing to bet that Ciaran went to a Catholic school – as was his right – instead of the many state schools available to him.

At the same time though, The Guardian’s coverage of Ireland is always, unfailingly, hilarious. Mind you, it is an impossible burden to understand anything about a near neighbour with a free press who speak the same language. How could you hope to write anything accurate?

I loved it, personally, when FG were elected and they called Enda Kenny “Edna Kelly”. They were probably thinking of a couple of other people or something.

Anyway, I live close to the deprived area where Bono grew up. All donations gratefully recieved. Please help me escape well to do hell.

I assume you refer to Britain as the country with a free press because it sure as f**k isn’t Ireland.

The Guardian was the paper to tell our nation about Gemma O’Doherty’s efforts and getting fired for them. Not one paper in Ireland reported on that at the time.

I went to school around there Jane, it’s the kind of area where nobody is rich enough or poor enough to own a horse.

As far as I know, his dad was Catholic and and his mom, Protestant. He has spoken about some issues in the past if I remember correctly. He did grow up in the 60s and 70s uber-Catholic Ireland afterall.

    1. Ciarán

uber-Catholic Ireland: so Catholic in fact, that the ‘ü’ was banned for being too German and Protestant.

      1. Wilhelm

His dad was Catholic and his mom a Protestant, maiden name Rankin (hint hint). It was a mixed religion married and at the time was frowned upon.

Bono’s northside Glasnevin was a far better place than my southside Ballyfermot, just sayin’

I heard Ballyer was full of beautiful meadows, bucksome cumly lasses and money fell from the sky as if sent from god himself directly into your silken pockets.

      1. Tidy Dave

Thanks for the image of “cumly lasses”. Trying to figure out whether I prefer mine more “comely” though.

Not the Guardian’s fault, Bono trots this line of ghetto spoofery to media everywhere (except Ireland where he’d be laughed out of it). I heard him on Italian TV years ago talking about people where he grew up being shot for their sneakers. I spewed my fetticini all over the gaffe when I heard it.

I played Bonopoly last night. Its like monopoly, but the streets have no names.

    BOOM!
    (gets coat)

When Bono grew up there it wasn’t called Glasnevin. It switched from Ballymun to Glasnevin North, and then just Glasnevin, after the towers and the trouble gave Ballymun a bad name.

  9. Bacchus

I think Bono has always put more effort into inventing his ghetto roots than his songwriting.
