You’re right, of course. Making reference to Ethiopia’s famine in a joking manner isn’t racist at all.

So making reference to a historical event in a really crappy joke constitutes racism because the population of such country is black? I don’t think so.

            BTW, from Wikipedia:
“Ethiopia’s population is highly diverse. Most of its people speak a Semitic or Cushitic language. The Oromo, Amhara, Somali and Tigreans make up more than three-quarters (¾) of the population, but there are more than 80 different ethnic groups within Ethiopia.”

I lived and worked in the country for a few years, so I’m familiar with Ethiopia’s ethnic breakdown. But thanks for the wikipedia excerpt.

no its’ not . It’s a crass joke but in no way racist.
i suggest you stop the hand wringing and learn what racism actually is.

Thanks, Donkey Kong. I’m not much of a hand-wringer, but I’ll take your suggestion under advisement.

Stumpy, get over yourself. And you’re not the only person to have lived and worked in a foreign country that isn’t Australia or the US.

nobody said it wasn’t offensive. a few said it wasn’t racist, and that is what we were dealing with. the race card is too easy to use and it creates unjustifiable taboos. a bit like people being labeled anti Semitic for disagreeing with Israeli government policies and actions.

It’s more pathetic than anything else that someone thought that would be funny enough to get out the spray can. Then, just in case people didn’t get what he meant by ‘no dinner included’, he threw in ‘no food’. Ha ha, good one. Brings me back to primary school in the 80’s.

That’s pretty tasteless for the first time flight connections to all of East and Southern Africa

Pretty good airline and it opens up the whole of Africa. Ethiopia is an amazing place – been once up to the north, and some brilliant jazz clubs in Addis. The Dreamliner is miles better than Boeing..

I’m going to be living in Addis for a few months starting this September. Am very interested in modern and contemporary Ethiopian music – can you recommend those Jazz clubs? Any other city tips…?

I can hook you up with the modern ones, can’t help with the contemporary ones though, sorry.

    More than stereotyping.
When an Englishman calls the Irish stupid, that’s racism
    Similar thing here. Racist drivel.
