Reading Outside The Box

Dad has a job that’s a little more unusual. He’s the Weatherman, one of four people throughout the world who control the changing of the seasons. When the phone rings in the old-fashioned wooden phone box outside the B&B, it’s Dad’s job to answer it, ushering in the new season….

Yikes.

As a long-time reader and occasional commenter, I thought I might chance my arm and see if you were interested in mentioning my book, which should be in the shops this weekend.

It’s called The Maloney’s Magical Weatherbox (priced €8.99), and it’s a fantasy adventure set in Ireland for ages 8 up. Dubray Books have made it their children’s Book Of The Month and it got a pretty good review in Kirkus

It’s a magical place, son, where daddy got the phone numbers of lots and lots of temporary mammies.

If there’s a book-signing with free wine (not Blossom Hill) and a few canapés let me know ;)

We’re having a launch next Saturday, the 9th, in Cloughjordan. There will be children. many, many children.

        Ah.
        Kids, no wine?
        G’luck with it Nigel man.
Cover is already selling the thing.

No, not really. I’m sure they would have listened to any ideas if I’d had them, but I was a complete blank. Too close to the material, probably. When I saw what Erwin Madrid drew I nearly fainted. There’s illustrations inside, too, and that artist, Keith Robinson, also drew a cover which I liked but which was undeniably more generic compared to this.

      Fortycoats’ Flying Sweetshop, more like.

(In my own defence I came up with the idea long before the Doctor Who revival.

There’s a proper FREE launch of the amazing Maloneys’ Magical Weatherbox book in Cloughjordan on Saturday, 9 May from noon-3pm. Not only will the illustrious author Nigel Quinlan be reading, kids (of all ages) can make their own Shieldsmen mask and shield, see the Shieldkids practise their blossoming Shieldsmen skills, and learn the Shieldsmen’s protection dance! (Shieldsmen? you say. Are there no Shieldswomen? See chapter 2.) That’s Saturday, 9 May noon-3pm, St. Kieran’s Hall, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. Just turn up!
