Portmarnock Golf Club, Portmarnock, Co Dublin
I see Portmarnock Golf Club is embarking “on a journey of discovery and research over the next few months” (“Portmarnock Golf Club to consult members about admitting female members”). Perhaps they will discover that this is 2015 rather than 1520.
Frank Harvey,
Dublin 6.
In fairness.

Perhaps Mr. Harvey, Perhaps. All we can do at this early stage is pray.
Anecdotally, the main opposition to allowing women members comes from members’ wives. Apparently they’re quite happy that their husbands are kept out of the way of some seductress in the clubhouse on her own. The same is certainly true of the Kildare Street club.
The main reason is that they currently get to play for €1 a round and have all the perks of membership (except voting and the main bar) without having to pay for it. If they admin women then they will have to pay full prices.
Correct. Think the same happened at one of the tennis clubs (Fitzwilliam?). A lot of women ultimately had to stop playing because they either couldn’t afford or couldn’t justify the new much higher expense. But as long as the PC brigade is happy, who cares, right? Btw, when are women only gyms going to be banned?
Women only gyms is where women go to have the cake, and eat it.
Its also where we have all the sexy pillow fights in our pants
Before or after if you’ve sweated in them.
My Japanese friend wants to know.
With your twin sister Don?
Sexy sexy incest….
the family that lays together stays together Don
#Just sayin’
Didn’t one of the BBC’s older golf commentators suggest that equality for women was actually pushing them out of golf for that very reason?
Yep, that was exactly what he said – there has been a sharp reduction in total UK women golf club members in recent years as golf clubs have equalised the previous difference in annual subscription costs due to the equalisation of playing rights.
Maybe golf shouldn’t be so expensive
Mate people shouldn’t play it cos its sh1te
Pitch n Putt?
Already the undisputed champion in my house Domestos
@ Don P
Lots of public courses where you can play golf for a reasonable fee.
Genuine question – what is reasonable Rob? Where I’m from you can play for a fiver or less, depending on the course.
@Don
There are public gold courses in Dublin where you can get 18 holes for less than a tenner.
My point being (aside from the gender issue), there aren’t really any huge financial constraints on anyone playing golf; your choice of course is just a little more limited.
Ah ok.
Still, if I was a really good golfer, I might want to play on a championship course.
Why do you think that your opinion in this matter is of any relevance?
The Irish Times have been agitating at Portmarnock members for decades now. Their whining, aging readership is dying a slow painful death. Having social justice “experts” on their permanent payroll isn’t helping them. Nor is employing second wave feminists who would love nothing more than for a Portmarnock golf club man to have swept her off her feet about 30 years ago. And as for the work-for-free third wave feminists “employed” at the Irish Times… Lol. Portmarnock golf club members are prospering and winning and have nice houses, nice familiies and nice cars for a reason.
“Why do you think that your opinion in this matter is of any relevance?”
…says the man with some of the most irrelevant backward ramblings ever.
you go, girl – police this website!!!!!!
You are like, so cool!!!!1
No, you’re too cool for me.
now this, gentlemen and ladies, is how you troll!
ABM used to be a much better troll. You could almost hear the spit hitting the screen.
How do you explain the closet homosexuality of some of the middle aged male players ABM? Eh?!?
“nice houses, nice familiies and nice cars”
I’ll give you maybe..maybe (depending on taste)… at best two out of those three, as potentially true statements
Is this true? Because we saw the WPGA there a few years back and…. i didnt check downstairs but… im pretty sure they were all women
Were they members? You realise that women can play at the golf club, they just don’t have equal voting rights and, as a result, don’t have to pay thousands every year in subs.
Yes I wasnt trying to be funny dear, just thought it was bizarre that they’d have such an important womens golfing competition in a club that doesnt allow women members
That WPGA event was the portmarnock hotel golf course – this is the old club, there are two clubs in Portmarnock.
ah ok, thanks for clarifying Alison!
Golf courses are such a waste of gorgeous land…
Come the revolution lets make em all parks!
St Andrews “the home of golf” is designated as a public park on Sundays when there is no major golf tournament in play.
There’s nothing stopping you from buying your own land and setting up your little revolutionary hippie commune.
ABM, I love you, you know I wouldn’t make such a big expenditure decision without discussing it with you first. We’ll need to trash all this out before the wedding xxx
He’s not allowed marry that heifer until AFTER the referendum passes.
Crucifixion parks?
Without golf clubs, cities would have a lot less green space. What do you think would be in the place of Elm Park in the middle of Dublin 4?
All that green space only the rich can share. No chance of going for a stroll around Elm Park in the evening. So for most of us its just an area surrounded by hedges and walls. You can only appreciate it if you happen to be looking out from St Vincents.
I find it difficult to understand the vitriol against golf and golf courses: there are large green areas (rugby pitches) in D4 as well that are only open to a limited number of individuals, but people tend not to get their knickers in a twist about them.
how many rugby pitches fit into an 18-hole golf course?

Hmm a private members club who decides who they allow in? Where have I heard of that before? Theres no such things a women only gyms are there???? Ahh no way that couldnt be true. I say gender quota’s for all!!!! Can’t wait to see the female bin men we are due, i bet they will be dooorty
Yep – next up: http://womensgym.ie/
Equality, for all, yeah! Let’s go.
*yawn*
Do you understand why some women would prefer to go to a women’s only gym/class?
Do you understand what equality means?
By the way, you do realise that Portmarnock is not a men only club, right?
So, no.
I don’t go to gyms, I’d like a summary Don… if women can have gyms, why can’t men have their golf courses?
Its true, women have all the gyms
I googled it, as you instructed someone below….
http://www.salon.com/2013/04/23/are_female_friendly_gyms_sexist/
So, that gym banned men because women were self conscious about themselves while training…. will they ever put a cork in it. Ooooh, “I’m self conscious” or “the men grunt too much” or “they smell the place up” [ it’s a fupping gym for Gumbos sake! ;) ] are not reasons enough or justification for sexist rules.
Are there other reasons?
Note: I’m not particularly concerned by this, just curious.
The self-conscious thing is a HUGE part of women not exercising, especially when girls about about 13-14 and start becoming aware that they are publicly viewed in a way that boys are not. There are also religious reasons for some women particularly in London, who the guy in the article successfully stopped from going to classes at that gym (well done him, he must be so happy).
There are women’s gyms but most are open to both sexes. No one is missing out. And face it, they make a lot of money because there is a lot of demand. So regardless of whether you believe what women say about working out, there must be some truth in it if they are prepared to pay to go to a women only gym.
There are plenty of golf courses out there that are open to both sexes. Why do ALL golf clubs need to be open to both?
Don… so would you agree that men should have a reduced gym fee for the hours of restriction caused by the women only times?
Say, as he says, 442 hrs / yr or 8.5hrs a week. About one day. So gym membership for men should be reduced by at least a 7th and womens fee increased.
Now, that would be fair, wouldn’t it?
I’m still not convinced about the self conscious thing…. by the way, for under 16s maybe, just. But, they are not going to gain self confidence hiding behind their body self consciousness, which to me sounds counter productive to the problem of getting over body self consciousness.
And when does body self consciousness end, and banal body obsession begin… does “oh, I have a bad hair day” count…. my example is facetious, I know.
Do u understand why some men would like to play golf and socialise with other men or simply without women in attendance?
Yes. And they can do that by playing golf with only men. They are more than happy to have women in the club house serving their drinks aren’t they?
Women are allowed play, they just can’t be members. Women can play any day of the week, they can play as a group of women or they can play with men.
Men are not allowed train in Curves gym at all. What’s good for the gander is good for the goose. No?
Paolo, if you’re that upset, set up a men’s only gym.
There is a certain breed of men that should be banned from my gym,the grunters, the sweat swingers, the sauna shavers , those that confuse teeny shorts with appropriate gym wear , those who happily adopt the splayed out legs position, as soon as anything resembling the female form sits in Jacuzzi. Ban the whole bloody lot of them and I will be happy.
“on a journey of discovery and research over the next few months”
Finding that women are not as good at golf…
Rocket science!
Another no
Why don’t you explain the difference between women’s gyms and mens golf clubs then Don?
So if you don’t think women only gyms should be allowed then you don’t believe men only golf clubs should be allowed either?
Nah. If you can’t work it out or work out how to use google to find out, which is what everyone else does, then I can’t really be bothered explaining it. Plus, I could explain it until the cows come home and it won’t be enough for some people.
You aren’t even willing to try to defend your position. Because you have nowhere to go.
Except to my women’s only gym!
You want me to google your opinion on something>?
You haven’t explained it at all.
I wasn’t trying to Mani.
Yes rotide, because Google is only made up of my on opinions.
I asked you a pretty simple question. You responded with ‘google it’.
Still waiting for the answer dear.
For the record, I don’t give a toss if there’s women only gyms, just as i don’t care that women cannot become members in certain golf clubs.
I’m struggling to understand why you care passionately about one and not the other
All it is Don, is another example of you getting up on your high horse (let’s call her ‘Femimare’ ) before thinking about what it is you’re actually offended about. It just lends less and less credence to your opinion when it comes to issues where you are actually in the right.
“It just lends less and less credence to your opinion when it comes to issues where you are actually in the right.”
As does calling me dear or talking about a Femimare. Good one guys, looking sharp there
I like your style Don but I feel that you fell for the old equality bullshit bingo again.
Not allowing women to become members in a golf club is ostensibly discriminatory based on gender if women are ordinarily allowed to play golf or work or visit there etc.
The case of men wanting to join women only gyms hasn’t arisen here yet but affords a view into what we can expect if the equality police get their way on every little thing. I see no reason why men can’t be allowed join women-only gyms. The only argument you’ve put forward it seems to me is that men ‘might’ make women feel self-conscious but this is not a lawful basis on which to mount an argument in favour of positive discrimination. I don’t really agree with affirmative action in the US or with gender quotas either for much the same reason. Either you want a level playing field or you don’t, and while ordinarily positive discrimination might be seen as an attempt to redress an imbalance I don’t think you can argue it in the case of women-only gyms, but you might be able to argue it for travellers or asylum seekers or those with a long and well known history of marginalisation.
M8 A MINE WORKS IN A WOMENS ONLY GYM, BUT ITS OK CAUSE HES DE GAY
DID HE HAVE TO DO A BONER TEST FIRST? LIKE DEY DO FOR DEM PERVERTS BEFORE DEY GET OUT OF JAIL? WHAT IF HE WAS A FALSE GAY??
Mr Harvey’s next campaign is to made all public loos unisex.
These days, that just means an equal right to piss in the street.
I’ve seen many an Alexandra school girl squatting in the lane at the top of Grafton St. on a Saturday night.
Always brings a smile to the face.
Why is it ok to expect equal access to clubs between races but not between sexes?
because racing clubs have different membership criteria to sex clubs
IMPORTANT:
I tried to join Curves today and was shown the door, because IM A MAN!!
Typical bloody feminazi’s, discriminating because I was born a certain
way and not living upto their impossible lady standards and yea so what
if i choose not to wear makeup? Thats my right as a human being to express myself.
…I shared a flight to Atlanta with a group of Portmarnock members going on a golfing trip…a really obnoxious bunch…one guy in particular was asked to sit down several times and eventually photographed and told that he was barred from flying Delta. To paraphrase Groucho…I wouldn’t join any club that would have these pricks as a member.
“Quick lads, lets get the round started before we get stuck behind the women golfers”
Just a by the by. Royal Dublin Golf club on bull island doesn’t allow women members either but nobody seems to mention it.
I know a member he pointed this out to me with glee. He uses the excuse given above that his wife likes the fact she can play cheaply and that there are no strange seductresses in the clubhouse.
Protestants (and wannabe Protestants and New Protestants) are A ok according to the Irish Times. The height of unfashionable is to be a) Catholic, b) male and c) prosporous. No €20 weekend brunches in D6 for those guys..
