Naomi Quinn at a demonstration against the 8th amendment last year in Dublin

“I do not believe that this house should be rushed into making a decision[ on the Eight Amendment to the constitution that bans abortion] … This requires the most careful consideration by whoever is elected. There won’t be a referendum on this in the lifetime of this government.”

Taoiseach Enda Kenny this afternoon in the Dáil

There you go now.

They had the balls to have a referedum on SSM. Albeit that was a lot more to do with the much maligned labour party

      1. manolo

I didn’t hear the church threaten to excommunicate government people if the SSM amendment got through….

FG must be content to hope there’ll be no more messy cases to show up the uselessness of current legislation between now and the next election.

    1. Medium Sized C

      Maybe….

But how many governments have been toppled by abortion cases to date?
I’m betting, that they are betting, that it is WAY safer from a political standpoint to stand 10 feet away from the 10 foot barge pole that they wont be touching abortion with.

Once you factor in junior party syndrome and Fianna Fails continued weakness, they probably reckon they have a strong chance of getting back into government. They aren’t gonna shake that now.

      1. scottser

their procrastination won’t topple anything C, but i’m sure it’ll be well noted at election time.

    As if!

There’ll be an election inside 6 month. This was never going to happen.

      1. ffintii

But no refer enda sounds better

Let’s face it, FG will have the unpalatable choice of coalition with SF or FF, come next election

          You’re right, of course.

We’re absolutely f***ed, whichever way we turn.

-And that’s why I’ll ALWAYS vote for Sinn Féin.
-I mean, what’s the harm? What could go wrong?

  3. ___

It’d be nice if this got dealt with sooner rather than later but there’s no chance of them taking on anything contentious before the next election.

This government getting re-elected would represent by FAR the best chance of getting the 8th amendment repealed.

      1. Sam

A govt kicked out on its @r$€ would represent the best chance of the next one being a bit more aware of the idea that they work for us, not rule over us.

The “My body My choice” argument tends to put some people off. I think the vast vast majority of people would be against the idea of unrestricted abortion but the majority of people would be in favour of the option to abort up to, say 16 weeks without any medical reason with provision made for later term abortions where there are extenuating circumstances. Most people that I speak to feel that a foetus with a fully developed central nervous system can feel pain and should be afforded some protection.

    1. fluffybiscuits

That argument I would have said holds up to 24 weeks (must do my research). Add on top the case of a foetus which has fatal abnormalities or comes about as a result of rape and its stronger argument to bring in terminations.

    2. Fluter Bad

Indeed. 16 weeks, or 4 months in old money, is about right. The my body slogan has to go too, too devicive.

          1. Don Pidgeoni

And which countries in the world let you abort at that stage? The UK doesn’t and the US doors in rare circumstances. Don’t key that stop you being overly dramatic. My body, my choice.

          2. Don Pidgeoni

It’s not. It’s only divisive if you think that that phrase only means that women will kill foetuses at almost fullterm willynilky which is kinda insulting.

    3. PaddyIrishMan

Agree. The correct thing to do is to remove all reference to abortion from the constitution and to legislate. 16 weeks is about right. 24 is too far.

    4. Don Pidgeoni

The presence of a nervous system does not mean it can feel pain, especially as pain is subjective. But the brain didn’t develop the necessary pathways until after 20 weeks.

    5. dereviled

Our society rules women’s bodies. They have to go abroad to do this.
No, they are not lobbing off an 8month foetus for Beach Body.
I would rather we own our faults and failings and give support and not slut shaming.

      1. Odis

Come on now. Didn’t Edna give you Gay Marriage. The guy should get a Nobel prize FFS.

      2. Don Pidgeoni

The abortion debate reminds me a lot of the SSM debate. Oh the gays will just go and buy children, oh the women will just go kill babies at 8 months. It is disingenuous and completely without faith in the people involved.

  5. Fluter Bad

Over 700k voted against the ref. There’s no way Kenny could get this through with that kind of base.

  6. Lorcan Nagle

The next Abortion Rights Campaign open meeting is on in Outhouse on Capel Street on the 15th of June at 7PM. If you want to make a difference, please come along and see what you can do to help.

      1. Lorcan Nagle

We do what we can. Work begins this week on this year’s march for choice (September 26th, save the date now!), and we’re going to try and make it the biggest and best yet!

  7. JunkFace

Abortion is always a popular topic at dinner parties. Try it at your next dinner party, it really livens up the place.

  8. Peter Dempsey

The referendum should be for full unrestricted abortion for any reason up to nine months.

    Yes or no.

    No half measures.

No hard cases [rape, incest, FFA] to be used as a sop.

    1. Lorcan Nagle

A referendum will be whether to remove the 8th amendment to the constitution or not. This will remove the main legal issue which presumably is the basis of the Attorney General’s advice to the government. It’ll be up to legislation introduced after the repeal of the 8th to decide the exact details.

  9. andymac

There is no correct stage of a woman’s pregnancy to kill the baby. Women should never have this free pass to murder. The rape argument, why should the child be punished, it might be the best thing to come from something terrible. You get raped which is hugely traumatic and then kill a baby even more trauma…insanity!

  10. Caroline

That’s the other great thing about abortion as a topic, really gets the nuanced thinkers to open up and take us through some rigorous philosophical exercises. Can’t wait for loads more of this.
