Migrants being rescued by the Irish Navy on LÉ Eithne off the coast of Libya last night and this morning.

RTE reports:

“At around 9am this morning the LÉ Eithne came across 100 migrants on board a rubber dinghy and a rescue operation is under way [off the coast of Libya]. These operations follow the successful rescue of 201 migrants who were found in five makeshift boats yesterday.”

Meanwhile, Neil Michael in the Irish Daily Mail, reporting on the 201 migrants rescued yesterday, writes [not online]:

“The migrants were last night due to be transferred to the 176m British Royal Navy assault ship, the HMS Bulwark, on which they will be transported to a port of safety in Italy.

Disease and hygiene would be a potential problem if they’ve been on a crowded boat for several days fleeing a region with no meaningful access to health care or medicine land with basic water supplies disrupted. No sense in taking easily avoided risks.

“why not bring them back here?”

Jesus Christ. Does anybody actually sit down and think things out anymore.

Shouldn’t LÉ Eithne be patrolling our own coastline, we only have a handful of patrol vessals

We’re leaving ourselves completely vulnerable to Welsh invasion. Charlotte Church is marshalling her forces as we speak!

The Naval Service have 6 other vessels, and with all due respect to fisheries protection and smaller SAR responses they carry out, this is the most useful thing they’ve done in years.

Wonder will Óglaigh na hÉireann PR be as quick to tell us all about it when the LÉ Eithne assists the NATO navies in bombing the ‘people traffickers’ in Libya shortly?

  3. JoeO

The LÉ Eithne is there as part of a “European” navy task force to address the issue of immigration to Europe by boat from North Africa. Part of the plan is to attack the ‘people traffickers’ in Libya – blowing up their boats. As someone said above, “we” don’t have any bombers, but the other European armies involved do and their navy ships have missiles etc. So the LÉ Eithne (“we”) will be assisting them in these attacks if and when they are carried out.

    1. Odis

They (“we”) could do do their part in protecting European fisheries, as the missiles are launched.

Bombers? A sharp stick or a belt of a hammer would do for many of these “vessels”, as long as the water was deep enough to make recovering them difficult.

      1. Odis

Bombers and missiles, sounds more alarmist. I think JoeO wants you to admire his PC credentials.

They’re great Joe. I for one am impressed.

I made the mistake of reading about this on The Journal last night, according to the comments “a wall should be erected around Africa” to “keep the welfare scroungers out of Ireland”, sickening stuff.
