This week’s Tullamore Tribune [County Offaly]
‘Theobald Wolfe Tone’ writes:
Former Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, will lay a wreath at the republican monument in the grounds of Tullamore Courthouse on Friday evening. Eamon O’Cuiv will address the crowd. The local FF organiser has asked for people to get into the spirit of 1916 by wearing clothing of the time such as ‘caps, hats or trenchcoats’.
Apparently ‘hundreds are expected’ and those taking part in the parade are asked to gather at 7:15pm outside Paddy Power bookmakers. Perhaps it’s a Paddy Power prank because surely the man who sold the country out for a few billion couldn’t possibly be laying a wreath at a commemoration which marks the death of ACTUAL republicans?
Anyone?

Expect vendors along the route chanting “Caps, hats and trench coats”.
The spirit of 1916, indeed. A great day out. Looking forward to seeing some of Britannia’s Huns with long range guns. Great bunch of lads.
No, the ‘spirt’. It’s printed in a newspaper, it must be true.

I’m not sure what the anyone is about. People wore pretty cool hats, flat caps and trench coats back then. Example: http://i.imgur.com/uUVo9xI.jpg The fella in the back is wearing a trenchcoat.
Yeah, it was all Brian Cowan’s fault.
Well, it wasn’t not his fault.
He had a big part to play in it anyway.
Keep standing uyp for the party Paolo. They’ll remember your efforts when the electorate have forgotten what the party did and stick them back in the Dáil.
You must be kidding, in my youth I voted for FF candidates once or twice but not for a very long time. It’s pretty clear that the property boom and lax oversight spanned several Governments. It’s also pretty clear that the ECB were playing fast and loose with the truth when they forced Ireland to take a bailout. It is also pretty clear that all of the major parties had the same policy as FF so blaming one man is not helpful.
….sure Cowen was one of natures barmen who was sent of to UCD where they gave him a degree to get rid of him. He inherited tha Da’s seat and since he had practised/acted for a few years as a solicitor he became one of the dreaded intellectual wing of FF. Come back Bertie …save us from these smartasses…
What’s wrong with pointing out trenchcoats? That was normal attire for your average militant republican back in the day.
And they had actual trenches back then too to wear them in.
Broadsheet can you remove this article title as I find it offensive, the trench coat mafia was the name of a gang of school shooters responsible for multiple murders, think of the families.
This.
Columbine.
I’m gonna guess your correspondent is one of the ‘I’m not a member of any political party but I do think Gerry Adams is great’ variety
wreath laying at 2pm, followed by the ‘turning in the graves’ of dead republicans at 2.15
It’d sicken yer hole a’right.
Come back Liz, all’s forgiven!
Bertie had nothing to do with it of course. Blame the culchie
You’re not coming to this fancy dress party then – I take it?
I hope you now see why ye did so rubbish in that news media poll; it’s because ye are one step below Joe Duffy, bunch of moany whingey b@st@rd$.
*drops ice cube down sickofallthisbs’s ass crack
@sickofallthis where were you when Brian Cowen sold the country? The people commemorated in the monument fought for a republic. They didn’t go out and to get mamed and loose their lives for Fianna Fáil to sell the country.
@daddylonglegs I just think it’s ironic that the Taoiseach who oversaw the sale of the country is going to lay a wreath for the Irish Republican dead. That is all!
How does one “loose” one’s life?
Well before that I guess I was there telling people not to buy houses they clearly couldn’t afford and then after that I said I told you so, sweetheart xx
Em by the way Wolfe Tone? How profound!
It appears the fat drunk is only a “private citizen” when it suits him.
…oh well played…I was going to say ‘fat drunk’ but thought I would be redacted.
It’s in the public domain.

I’m guessing the Broad Black Brimmer would also be acceptable? Interestingly, this particular hat-style was made famous by the most infamous “Anti-1916ist”. (I know that’s not really a thing!) Ian Paisley (RIP) grabbed a token of his most hated adversary and wore it on his head for most of his life – and for the most part , no-one noticed?
Always good to see FF remind us that they are The Republican Party. That’s if you think running the state for the benefit of your party is a Republican value of course. FG liked it so much they did the same but without throwing the odd shiny bead to the natives. We get the governments we deserve.
Trenchcoat? I doubt anyone in Offaly or Fianna Fáil owns anything of style from Burberry. Shame Clery’s has shut down.
Does the wreath contain our sovereignty?
Its a free country so let him lay his wreath and afterwards politely and with
dignity ask him and those who surround him on Friday evening, what was
their contribution to upholding the principles of the Republic with their performance
in Government, they wrecked the Nation, the current outfit have robbed it.
He is in good company with Dennis O’Brien….Topaz in a Tophat “by their fruits
ye shall know them”
