Did you lose your mind in The Kitchen?

The Kitchen Re-union 2015.

For one night only

Johnny Moy writes:

The Kitchen [at The Clarence Hotel, Essex Street, Temple Bar] opened its doors over 20 years ago and hosted 7 nights per week of different music from House / Hip Hop / Techno and all the micro genres that followed, huge international guests played week in week out – pre super club era – way too many to mention so we will play homage to them on this night and break out the classics that made it so special.

The Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin on July 11. Doors 11pm. €10.

Great oul spot in its heyday. Wouldn’t be into these nostalgia events so much, but plenty are.

Same page as you. These sort of things generally leave me cold. However, THIS ONE has me very interested. On the assumption that I can go and not have to visibly see how the DJs have aged (back facing the decks all night is my gut instinct), this sounds like a cracker.

That said, its not like the crowd will look much younger either!

I for one look forward to sessioning on prescription pills in a nursing home.

Yup – I’m dead against spending the fun time of the present visiting the fun time of the past.
Having said that, I saw a dub DJ in Dublin recently, 19 years after his prime – a mere tenner and a great small-housed night. He brought his son / protégé, which kinda signaled a continuation. More concerned about their live competence and vitality rather than how they look, in fairness.
        Go. And report back ;)

Anne – you make these snarky remarks to ruin a 2-way comment between Gav D and I. True, snarky comments are your thing. You’re like nightly rat poison laid out in the crevices of Broadsheet.

I too had many a great night there as well. The idea of going back to live it feels quite like a school reunion to me and I don’t mean that in a good way.

i remember getting fukd out of there for slipping on someone’s spilt pint that they didn’t bother cleaning up. unceremoniously trun out on the street while being told i was a danger to myself and others having had no drugs and halfway through a second pint.
needless to say, i never went back.

used to have a chuckle at the massive queues trying to get past the knobend bouncers alrite.

Did a few lines in the jacks with Shaun Ryder and Michael Hutchence back in the day

    good times!

Actually, it’s the Liquor Rooms now isn’t it. If so, I admit to being wrong on the interjet.

  4. Clampers Outside!

You had me until I read the venue… then it just, I dunno… lost all its buzz… lost its nostalgia.

Couldn’t they just say 90s club night featuring DJs from the era or some such. ‘The Kitchen’ is as much about the venue… in fairness :) Good times were had there!

the audience for this gig will be more interested in sitting down and “having a decent conversation” etc.

Judging by the responses, it sounds like it’ll be full of middle aged men. ;-)

Tuesday nights, Techno, awesome stuff. Think the night was called Diode. Sure who needs a Kitchen reunion when Dave Clarke DJ’s The Academy on the 24th of this month. A quadruple vodka red bull will cost about €25 instead of £5.

  6. Gordon Walsh

First had Vodka n Red Bull there, 5 punt for 2 double Vodkas & Redbull on the promotion night – didn’t sleep for a week!

Remember the Tuesday student/techno nights (called Genius I think) and pints of Guinness topped up with Red Bull. Also remember Aidan Kelly refusing to play a request by Naomi Campell (some Prodigy track). Great nights there, navigating the river that ran through the dance floor.

    1. Neil

Genius! Don’t know where I got Diode from. Ran by a very nice chap called Peter May if I remember correctly.

    2. C Sharp

That was Brian Chamberlain I believe.
I think Aidan Kelly did sets with him in those days though so maybe both were present.
They were playing house and she asked for Prodigy, handed them a CD – serious faux pas!
One of the bouncers had to take over the DJ set.
      Story made the tabloids.

That “river” was a pain in the hole – worst idea ever.
Can’t say I ever liked that venue.

  8. All the good ones fly south for winter

Recall the Tuesday techno nights (named Genghis I feel) and pints of Beamish topped off with YR sauce. Also recall Naomi Campbell stuck to the wall with cellophane, you could kiss her for a buck or slap her for two!

  9. jusiph

Blue on Wednesdays with Shay Hannon and Hugh Scully – those were epic nights. I would love to do it all again.

  10. Elimare

Stumbling to the ladies trying not to bump into Brian Molko who was wearing a massive fur coat on the dance floor.
