“Local artist James Joyce.” Seems alright to me. Available only to the locality where it is used. It’s nice to know you have artists in your local area. It doesn’t define the artist, it defines the area.

…unless, of course, the artist’s only presence is a local one. In which case I could see how it might sting a little.

…but mostly feel a bit bad for the guy having a momentary rant on Facebook which ends up screenshotted and on Broadsheet.

He’s got a point. Its a belittling term, especially after League of Gentlemen perfectly ridiculed the word.

I’m thinking you probably missed the point of most of League of Gentlemen then.

He really doesn’t, unless someone has used it without reference to a specific area. Now, let us wish for an end to this plague of strangers, for our futures to remain local and for new road to be totally destroyed.

    Beats local ‘workshy/naive dreamer’.

In all fairness in the grand ‘skeme’ of things his output is average at best, rehashed & repacked graff & elements of street art.

    Is he a ” street artist ” or a graffiti artist…let me guess hes not a graffiti artist he’s a “writer”..YAWNARAMA.

I’m pretty sure it’s simply used to denote the artist (or acts, when referring to bands) being from Ireland, as opposed to trying to belittle anyone. Never heard of this self-involved plonker though. Must be just another local artist

It’s mostly used to try and get the ‘local’ support crowd into a show. Nobody goes worldwide overnight, you gotta start ‘local’ and get a base.

    “paging Dr. Freud…”

*sound of feet/expensive shoes scuttling, after brief panting composes self

    “Yeeeeeees?”
“Penis metaphor dude, go to town.”
“Well the use of the emotional metaphor, ‘punched in the emotional dick” is a potent symbol of emasculation, that it is clearly an assault on the core manifestation of the male ego, but also note the act of violence itself is male in origin, a punch, not an effeminate slap, so we can firmly root this outburst in a manifestation of the id upon ego, the male aspects of the psyche pushing against the female aspect of the psyche, that is the mothering superego. Lastly pay attention to the term ’emotional’, the male psyche is only aware that it’s id is ’emotional’, that is impotent through the intervention of the superego, the mother who chastises. Thus if we further apply the metaphor now to how he uses the term ‘local’ and ‘international’ it is clear the ‘local’ is conceived as feminine, the suppressing superego, the literal removal of the penis or rather the fear of, whereas the ‘international’ represents the untethered male ego, the manifestation and victory of the childish id that has manifested through the ego.”
    “Tee el dee ar?”
“It’s is not that this individual has been “punched in the emotional dick”, rather it is that this man thinks of himself as having no penis, which is in effect the same thing, as behaviour must be consistent with belief.”
    “SHORTER!”
“Yes it’s true, this man has no dick.”

So it is demeaning to be called a ‘local’ artist.

Is it also demeaning to be called an ‘Irish street artist’ ?

Well, DMC, in your own words from the DMC fb “Promo for a short documentary on Irish street artist DMC to be released later in 2014” .

I think we should be told.

He has a big beard so he must be deep and interesting and not very local.

  9. Custo

I think it’s journalistic shorthand for ‘the artist is from the area’ and can be inspiring for kids reading a local paper to realise that they can achieve something artistically even if they’re from some provincial bogholl town that looks like it has no creative outlet. Chill out Dermot.

Growing up our Local Artist was Don Conroy. He’d come into the school and teach us how to draw bunnies.

I met him too, at the National Ary Gallery; he was lovely and I still have one of his books.
      Good times ; )

Interesting Don Conroy fact; he holds the European record for the distance killing of a rabbit in Europe with a .22 rifle. 106 yards verified. Remarkable. The World record is 108.
