Or words to that effect.

A leisurely afternoon at the Banking Inquiry.

From top Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tanaiste Joan Burton and  Pat Rabbitte.

Gut times.

Joan Burton: Irish economy was like ‘athlete on steroids’ (irish Times)

Enda Kenny: FF-led coalitions caused most damage to economy (The Irish Times)

Its probably true, although people wont admit it, Fine Gael did OK considering the circumstances

    1. Clampers Outside!

It’s not that they did OK, I believe, that people have a problem with…. it’s the burden share. And ALL the facts, stats and research out the wazoo say that the poor carried the heavier burden. That’s where they come into the cross hairs.

      1. ahjayzis

That IS Fine Gael doing okay – their voters expected and voted for that.

It’s Labour who’ve done the opposite of what they claim to stand for.

        1. realPolithicks

So FG will get all the credit and Labour all the blame, that doesn’t make any sense.

          1. ahjayzis

            It does really.

In a coalition government enacting broadly right wing policies the right wing party does well by it’s right wing voters, the left wing party, however…

How does it not make sense?

      2. Domestos

+1 for top half of ahjayziz’z comment, I wouldn’t say Labour did the opposite, though granted it happened on their watch.

they came in promising reform, and just followed the template left behind by FF. they had ample opportunity to change politics in the country, by being honest, and changing bad habits of former parties in power. but they didnt. it may as well have been FF in charge.

      1. fmong

Except the ‘Jobs For The Boys’ type antics went to FGers instead of FFers, bye bye rich property developers and the metro through north Dublin, hello *REDACTED* and loads of money for Castlebar

no they didn’t, they are scum bags, they lied to us and still crucify us… what they are forgetting is its the people of Ireland that the saviors here not these scummy politicians.
we believed their lies not time but come election time again FG and Labour wont be getting our votes.
Its odd how people soon forget

Lol you must be joking, the biggest bunch of muppetts ever, led my a very large muppett, (kenny) Its the people of Ireland got this country where it is so far, As far as i’m concerned a bunch of school children would run the country better that these morons

FF have on 3 occasions since independence come close to completely destroying the country due to their economic illiteracy. In the 1930s De Valera chose to begin an economic “war” with Britain, the effects of which were to pauperise Ireland and empty it of young people for the next 20 years. In 1977 FF the general election with populist promises such as the abolition of rates which they (unfortunately) then proceeded to implement. The resultant debts almost sank the country in the 1980s. The banking enquiry is currently hearing about Aherns latest attempt to sink the economy due to the incompetence of him and his fellow clowns. Inda, Joan and colleagues are right, much as we may not care to hear it.

    1. Domestos

The real damage was done in 2006 (half the bad debts of the banking crisis were racked up in this year alone), but look at the election manifestos of all parties in 2007. No-one had the balls to try and stop the flames.

      1. classter

The point is that FF has consistently dragged election campaigns towards a populist auction.

Then in power, they have consistently implemented irresponsible policies which have caused the country serious damage.

Pretending that FG / Labour (or anybody else) is equally to blame is disingenuous at best.

I heard a clip from Bruton saying, in 2007 vis-a-vis the contemporaneous ESRI reports, there was no way she could have known what was going to happen. House prices peaked in 2006, the crash was underway. Those ESRI reports were already getting hammered at the time, and weren’t worth the paper they were written on, then and for many years afterwards. The stock overhang was clear as day, there was no need for further construction for years to come. With every 10,000 houses being built representing 1% of Irish GDP anyone could tell stopping building, what 60,000 per annum?, was going to cause a massive slowdown with associated knock-on effects to breakfast roll sales, etc, etc. Deny, deny, deny, bulls**t.

  4. Atticus

I love the position of the harp logo on Richard Bruton’s head in the first pic. Quifftastic!

  6. Truth in the News

Kenny tells us now that Ahern and those that propped him up, sank the place
How come Kenny as opposition leader never mentioned it, when he was in opposition and got elected to office in 2011 and then implemented the FF 4 year plan, that FF were kicked out office for trying to impose….talk about brass neck, as for doing anything for Castlebar or anywhere else, more chance of a moving statue in Knock.

    1. cormacjones

FF weren’t thrown out for trying to implement the four year plan. They were thrown out because they drove the country off a cliff.

  7. Kieran NYC

People voted for FF three times in a row because they promised the most goodies and presents to the voters.

SF are now high in the polls for the exact same thing – ‘Vote for us and austerity ends tomorrow! Everyone gets a gift from the magic money tree!’

The Irish electorate is happy to go along with it every time.

    1. Denis Murphy

Im sure anything would be better than whats in at the moment & that would be easy, Shower of cowboys

Three cheers for Ends, the saviour of Ireland, who came up wIth that catchy headline? It even out does Willy cosgraves famous “blow ins blow out” phrase of cheap political no substance Rhetoric, although Enda Kenny makes forelock tugging cosgrave look like Rambo . How anyone can think Kenny saved us from german dominance is a complete mystery to me, what with the amount of ass kissing he’s done towards Angela Merkel over the past number of years. And nothing has improved for the ordinary joe unless your in business and finance everyone else can go F**k themselves irelands like a reservation with the natives living on third rate beef rations while the people in charge sell off the best cuts to foreigners and the wealthiest of society . Kennys a weasly worthless creep.

Maybe we would be better off if we did . For the simple reason that the country especially at the top is rotten to the core. Minister’s have absolutely NO respect for public opinion, do not have a duty of care to those who they allegedly represent. This countries so called 21C transport network is an utter joke as it is NOT accessible to everybody not to mention the fares. At least in Germany, as far as I could see while on several holidays there, EVERY small village was served by a local train into bigger towns. Everything ran ON TIME if it did not there would be outrage by those waiting, Yes I have experienced that. With a visiting friend yesterday in Dublin, he commented that the transport system and infrastructure was not fit for purpose….!!!! And I had to totally agree with him. Ireland on the one hand is one of the best countries to live in, on the other hand you have the ineptness of officials to manage ANY aspect of it in any effective way. Grossly overpaid self serving individuals who care more about their own pockets/futures than that of the job they are handsomely paid to do.

  10. Brainiac

Hm, well (scratching her head)..It’s not like Ireland is the only country in this mess. It happened to all countries in the EU.

However, It’s a well played game of “world takeover”by the banks and its shareholders. The strategy was simple to execute within the vaguely regulated banks industy (at the time). They were not bothered by trivial things like borders and nationality since they have no intention of keeping it that way. It seems like they created a situation where all the countries owed so much money that they now can’t pay it back and then they take over their properties/land/deeds and ownership of that country. Look at Greece. Germany (banks) wanted to take over the Greek books a couple of years ago and now they have done so without firing a single bullet.

Another way of describing it: I want your house and land, so I destroy your car and offer you a loan for a new car fully knowing you can’t afford to pay the installments but as you desperately need a car to get to work, I know you will take my “kind” offer of bailing you out of your dilemma…when your payment fail I will take your housedeeds and then ask you to pay rent for living in my house. I am in a win win situation and you are in a lose lose situation.

In Ireland: It looks like profit is running the country and the poor and middle income earners (we are a majority) are paying the profiteers. Look at the water charges ( was already included in our universal taxes as water is a basic right in out society) , look at Topaz deals. Look at NAMA….Look at the Referendum (and the Re-vote because the government did not like the outcome (ah.. it was our fault as we did not understand what we were voting for according to Gov))….Look at the education requirements for Crèches and Child-minders in relation to changes of Fetac accreditation in to QQI accreditation ( it’s a really interesting topic to look at and looks like a bit more than a coincident once you look at timing and price hikes both to register a course as a course provider (In the area of 1000 euro under FETAC and is now 10.00,15.000 under new QQI) and also the cost of the accredited courses for child care workers and government grants)… Look at the new artificial house price increase and consequently rent increase ALL HAPPENING AGAIN… AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON….just follow the river of money and see who is taking us for a ride or have a vested interest in all the deals going.

    One could speculate and say that there are no democracy, choice or acting in the best interest for our citizens. The people in power appear to make sure competition is cut off at grass root level and making it difficult for new companies to grow as the government is making it harder and more expensive for new corporations to start up. Maybe it still is a “job for the boys” society;

Disclaimer: This in all in my opinion only and some of the stated might not be factual or correct. I am not perfect (according to my ex boyfriend). sorry for the grammatical errors, but I write in a stream of thought.

Well when we first hit the recession it turned out that in New York City, a population of some 8 million individuals had 1 Fire Chief over the whole of New York yet in Ireland.. we had some 37 Fire Chiefs.. too many individuals in this country have over inflated incomes, money they are not entitled to by any means.. this country for years has been run like a Del Boy Only Fools and Horses get rich quick scheme..
