Fine Gael Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charlie Flanagan, TD with the new Passport Card, which can be applied for today through the DFAT website. Ireland is the first country to issue a passport card which will be valid for travel to 30 countries across Europe.

Ireland once again leading the field for countries investing in daft uneccessary projects that consume badly stretched finances and manpower.

a card for getting to 30 EU countries that your passport already grants you access to and that most irish emigrants will only ever pass through on their way to jobs in Australia, USA and Canada. This is bound to boost international trade with tax evading multinationals and improve our foreign affairs policy on dealing with immigrants in detention centres.

be sure to e-vote Charlie number 1 this coming election.

Your argument was going well until you started blabbering on about emigrants and tax evading multinationals.

Already ordered my card, pretty handy for regular flyers juts keep it in your wallet unlike clunky passports.

PS if you are aware of tax ‘evasion’ you should report it to Revenue rather than on here.

Its okay, elected officials in the EU and the US have already pointed out tax ‘evasion’ by foreign multinationals based in Ireland but I guess ‘exemption’ is probably a better word for the practise here considering evasion would suggest our government to be actively pursuing these companies for taxes owed.

Unlikely. I tried using the Android app and after about 20 failed attempts I couldn’t get a single image accepted. I followed all their rules and guidelines yet kept getting rejected. I think their validation software is getting confused by my beard!

I remember trying to use my drivers licence card in an off licence in the States last year and the gomer behind the counter refused to accept it, only a passport for non-Muricans would be accepted. Wonder how this dohickey will go down, can’t wait to try it.

Most states won’t accept driver’s licences from outside that state, let alone form another country.

Most EU countries have installed passport reading scanners for faster entry/exit/transfer – negating the need to queue. They are something of a standard and work very well and will be very much the future of travel. While I’m all for any form of programme that support efficiency when travelling, I’m not sure that this ‘limited’ card is the answer.

“Most EU countries have installed passport reading scanners for faster entry/exit/transfer – negating the need to queue” – hahahaha!

I am so glad that the one Charlie is holding said ‘specimen’ because I was wondering how that would fit in my nice leather Next wallet that won’t even fit a €20 note…

        1. Slightly Bemused

For ages was the only thing I could get out of a drinklink. Not enough for a €50 (I think we all partied, or some such) and they did not give smaller.
So yes, once a week or so I had the pleasure of trying to force a €20 note into the wallet my girlfriend gave me only to see it wadded into a messy folded slip.
But you know, it’s OK! The economy is getting better.
Now, where did I put the cheat code to make a coke machine spit out all it’s coins…?

I got a gift of a wallet few years that won’t fit a five-spot but is a great cardholder. Style over substance!

Wait so i need a new photo even though the last one is exactly the same as I am now (3 years difference) and 35 euro too? (plus 35 every 5 years)

    You can $*&% right off

…my passport is up next year, and I go to/from UK a lot for work, so thought this would be handy. When I check it says you have to have a Passport book first, to get one – so why bother ?
Secondly it says the passport card cannot be current beyond the date of expiry of your passport book – so mine, expiring in 2016, means I can only get a 11 mth card, and then re-apply – so why bother ?
If your passport book is good for 10 years, this is only good for 5 – so why bother ?
    ……….see where I’m going with this………… ??

Great idea. Most EU countries have national ID cards. Some countries even require you to carry ID. The irish passport renewal thing is a bit of a joke. Needing to get a priest, doctor, chartered accountant, principal, butcher, baker or candlestick maker to sign your passport application. But at least this is modern.
