I have a mate who was planning such an experiment as part of her thesis around Temple Bar…..I thought it would probably be not very interesting however I wonder now having seen this what would things be like here in Dublin in comparison….was just expecting the dodgy white transit van to show up…forward to 1.20.

they are confusing interesting with cringe worthy rte2 yoof type programing

and to think I’d usually press press play on any ould yoke to see if there was better angles of the granny smiths

Despite BS commentators’ tendency to label the Irish as the worst example of everything, I’d be pretty confident that the results would be markedly different if this same experiment was conducted in Dublin. The Irish are fundamentally decent (unless you’re a Traveller, then you can fupp off).

I think I remember some students at UCC did this experiment last year, and overwhelmingly the men in question offered genuine help, and showed serious concern for her. Obviously there are creeps everywhere, but yes I’m inclined to agree there might be fewer here.

There are some significant cultural differences in how women are treated in public space in different countries – as any women who’s walked alone (and sober!) in most southern european cities could tell you. The first time I went to Italy for example, I initially thought I was the victim of some kind of candid camera prank, that there was no way this kind of predatory behaviour could be real. But it was. I really don’t know how Italian women don’t go postal.

You’ve responded to MoyestwithExcitement, Ms. Piggy. Prepare yourself for a similar type of undesired relentlessness to that which you experienced in Italy.

            Really, yeah?

“It was a Saturday evening, 10.45pm on Camden Street. For me, this was the beginning of my journey home from work and the source of overwhelming feelings of degradation, objectification, anger, fear and raw sadness….. There were significant numbers of all-male groups coming from all directions…. As I stood at my bus stop, the wolf whistles, comments on my physical appearance and “hellos” loaded with intention began and brought with them those well known feelings of self-consciousness, awkwardness and embarrassment that I am certain countless women in Dublin face on an irritatingly regular basis….I decided then to walk towards another bus stop at Eden Quay……I noticed the faces of many other women on their own – all looking blankly ahead, also dodging and ignoring. I thought to myself, “Why don’t we say something back?””

Perception and reality are two different things.

        +1
We may move in rarefied circles but I anyone I know would be concerned for the woman’s vulnerability foremost, drinking out of a bag? in the middle of the day?

On a related note, Spanish female acquaintances have commented on the relative respectfulness of Irish men compared to what they have experienced at home, of course we have our own share of apes, but less than elsewhere, it seems, so that’s a plus.

Yeah one Spanish woman telling you Irish lads are better than the ones at home (cause of course, no Irish woman ever has said lads from a particular country are better than Irish ones) definitely proves that we are superior to foreigners.
