I’ve always found it mad that the arch-proto-socialist, Jesus Christ, is the mascot for right-wing *********s like Hayes, Bruton et al.

Do we need to establish a baseline for right-wing wankstainery, I wonder? Agustin Pinochet and John Bruton don’t exactly strike me as soul brothers under the skin*. By US metrics, Christian Democrat parties are practically commies! Book looks bloody awful, but hey, it’s a free country.

*Mainly because Pinochet got the trains running on time

Hey, left and right’s a spectrum. Just because someone’s more of a tool doesn’t make the lesser tool any less of a tool.

But from what I can remember from faith-formation in school, valiantly defending the right to charge an extortionate rent, bravely justifying extortionate lending rates, usury basically, and the like are the kind of things Jesus would raise an eyebrow at.

He originated the whole ‘from each according to his means… etc.’ philosophy. So whatever these ‘faith’ based politicians are practising, it’s not faith in any of Christ’s teachings I’m aware of.

One could also argue that a generous social welfare system is a rather firm nod at Christianity , human value based on humanity rather than usefulness in society.

I admire Bruton for publicly stating that 1916 was a mistake. By neither playing to the popular nor the populist, he has shown spine.

It’s a much more elegant construction: I would have preferred Onanist myself but chacun á son gout and all tha.

@J: There’s a bunch of frustrated Young/Old Fogeys on this board: I number myself among them. Not for us, the Karma Stone pre-work rave but rather a leisurely exegesis of the Telegraph’s obituary page over a crafty afternoon pint in a Victorian gin palacel

John Bruton launched by Brian Hayes. Wish it was into the sun, but alas, not to be. Monkey spankers, the pair of them.

    Yawn.
Some politicians believe their legacies to be far far greater than what they really are. Taoiseach for 2 measly years and he thinks everyone’s still listening to him.

They are. They use him as a foghorn on Hook Head. He sounds as if he’s the lovechild of Mr. Bean and a donkey.

This is the self important tool that had all aircraft movement stopped and the army brass band waiting on his arrival in Dublin airport during his short stint as Taoiseach. I was there, it was like some tinpot African dictatorship. President General Kimba welcomes you to Zangaro.

I work for a local newspaper, I have to review this for work, I’ve gotten 7 pages in over the last two weeks and I’ve to have it read by Friday. Wish me luck, I’m finding it soul crushing. As bland as his his brand of politics so to is his writing. Unpickupable is bang on the money.
