This afternoon.

Michael O’Riordan writes:

A deep bass throbbing got my attention and I tracked it down to the LE Niamh as she entered Dublin past the East Link bridge just now (2:05 pm). Apparently 14 metres shorter than her little sisters the Samuel Beckett and the James Joyce, the Niamh is still one hell of a good looking vessel!

Sexist pig.

Ooh, wish I’d seen that, and I wasn’t far away either, dammit! Are James Joyce and Sam Beckett transvestites?

In the Navy it is common to refer to the ships in the feminine, regardless of the name. Interestingly, the Russians refer to them in the masculine (something I learned from Hunt for the Red October :) )

I would say that the Niamh is now tied up (please no bondage jokes :) ) at John Rogerson’s Quay.

    Lovely floating tax money.

    So vital, So needed.

What? Sorry ?? Trolleys? Where? In hospitals? Nonsense. It looks lovely floating up the Liffey.

Well if our fisheries don’t need protecting, we may as well do away with the Gardaí too, sure your home doesn’t need protecting neither.

Or we could scrap the ship and outsource to some Isle Of Man DOB run security firm….. sure, it’d be dead cheap like.

Idiot, how about squeezing some of the money out of the bailed out banks before you start attacking the underfunded naval service?

Is this the only site that uses the term “blue shirt”? All the time to shut down someone’s point of view? Cause it’s mental.

A tiny bankrupt island with non functions hospitals has no need for costly warships or a large army.

          It’s that simple.

A coast guard with simple firearms training is more then sufficient. And if you can’t understand that I actually feel sorry for you.

Only 12 more hours on the gran, the lads on the boat need more life jackets………

A sovereign island nation that can’t secure its own coastline will rapidly become the number one illegal narcotics gateway to Western Europe and have its territorial waters reduced to deserts by supertrawlers, and is on the slippery slope to failed nation state status. Also our warships aren’t costly and our army isn’t large, relatively speaking.

You know the trolley thing, homelessness etc. is only tangentially about the quantity of money spent, right? We had trolley crises when we were rolling in cash and the health budget had extra billions.

It’s the systems that are rotten, designed to be rotten, in fact. Until you see that you’ll always be suckered by politicians saying it’s all about an extra 50 million here or there.

it would be nice of our navy to sink one of those spanish factory fishing ships. just one mind, i’m not talking about anything drastic.
