What Edna really means by appropriate woman
      is anything that
Bonotti, Owen, Doyle, Mitchell or whatever oul’ blueblouse leftovers get to him first
      Can squeeze themselves inta

This is a weird piece of criticsm.

Child-bearing age presumably is about 18-40, maybe these days more like 28-40. The latter category are the ideal age to be first time candidates, no?

Is there some suggestion that FG are turning away non-practising Catholics or those from outside South Dublin (other than by their traditional bias amongst the middle and upper-middle class)?

Having a nice smile & talking about parenthood seems to be de rigeur for politicians in general.

It is a positive step that a traditional party is making efforts to encourage women to run (or finally allowing them to run maybe) but expecting the female candidates of a centre right (ish) party to be progressive is a bit much.

Engage brain, then leap to FG’s defence.

This isn’t about the gender quote or female candidates in general. It’s about Enda’s weird comment that the expert group on the 8th amendment will be chaired by “an appropriate woman”, whatever the hell that means. (I think Chris’ graphic gets to the heart of it pretty nicely)

In the new order the social media zealots will forbid anyone to use adjectives when describing women.

What persecution you suffer, you poor old martyr to the cause of insulting women on the internet. It’s just not fair.

There is nothing insulting about suggesting that a person may be appropriate or inappropriate for a role. There is nothing insulting that more than one person may satisfy the criteria that would deign someone appropriate for a role. There is nothing insulting about suggesting a woman should head up a committee on a reproductive rights referendum.

There is something weird about the use of the word ‘appropriate’ though. It strikes the wrong note. It implies that the woman might be either appropriate or inappropriate per se, by virtue of her own innate qualities or being, rather than due to her political affiliations or qualifications. Everybody understands it is the latter that is meant. Most still heard echoes of the former. It’s subtle, but it’s there. And in the context, it’s unfortunate. And a little amusing.

Context is everything Caroline especially for idle minds quick to take offense at every perceived little thing

How else can Eamonn let people know he is a big brave he-man unless he can call them sexist names over the internet?

Would have thought this also fitted Fianna Fail, though in their case it would be ‘Is she of childbearing age’ the line from ‘yes’ would be ‘not appropriate’ and the line from ‘no’ would also lead to ‘not appropriate’.

FF should put forward Patricia Casey. Affiliated with FF, understands women better than women themselves, always speaks on behalf of all mna na heireann, big fan of suffering by others. Beatification-ready-lady.
