Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers (Castlecomer) held its Centenary Sale in The Gresham Hotel [Dublin 1] this afternoon, where an original copy of the Proclamation sold for €150,000 hammer price. A hundred years ago they were printing them ready for use.
Pity these things are sold
one sold for almost 400k around 10 years ago. there are only around 50 left now.
There should be one in every county in Ireland (and 6 held in reserve just in case)
“Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers”?!? FANtastic.
Interesting fact, the printing of this was treasonous so it had to be done late at night in secret on the eve of the rising.
If you look closely you will see the R’s and C’s in IRISH REPUBLIC and POBHLACT NA H’EIREANN arent actually R’s and C’s. they were missing these two letters so they had to hack them together using the P and O letters on the printing press.
Nice factoid
The very same kind of people who were critical of the Rebellion are now making money out of its memorabilia.
Gombeenism.
quite symbolic .. literally every piece of ireland that can be sold will be.
