My father was a third Tommy Cooper, one third Spike and one third Dave Allen. Hated the Cooper side, sorry.

I used to get sent to bed if Tommy Cooper came on the telly.
He was a bit too avant-garde for me Da and me Ma said he wasn’t funny.

No idea if that’s a question Frillzer. But the father rolled out jokes borrowed from all three plus his makey-ups and very cryptic puns. Amazingly all that oul vintage humour is back now. I thought no divil born this side of 2000 heard of Dave Allen but they have ;)

I meant Spaghetti Hoop’s dad sounds fantastic.
Dave Allen is a God, that goes without saying.

Yup. Grew up on fag smoking whiskey drinking Dave along with Spike, Peter, Michael & Harry. My Dad did great riffs too on Jonathan Winters and Stan Freberg. Those records are still wonderful. Roll in Zappa and Miles Davis, rural ’80s Ireland as a kid for me was a blast.

Similar story here, my Da was a big fan of The Goons, Tony Hancock, The Two Ronnies, used to love listening to those tapes in the car on long journeys.

  4. The Old Boy

I did like Tommy Cooper’s gag about the owner of a fez shop in Turkey who told him that he was the only Englishman to have visited his shop who had tried on a fez but hadn’t said “Not like that, like that!”
