What’s the issue with first time buyers having to save for 4 years to buy a home. None in my opinion.

The CBoI did some analysis of how difficult it is for people to save the deposit. They look at facts and figures and not the whining of Joe Duffy callers. Their conclusion, it is very attainable.

only if you save like crazy and don’t go on holidays for four years. forget going out, new clothes, red meat for four years. or only if your parents help you. or you earn over 100k.

We saved 70k over 3.5 years, went on sun and ski holidays and do not earn over or near €100k.

Move to cheaper rent, cook at home, bring your lunch to work, limit time in pub.

If you want to think of yourself as a slave who should be grateful for the crumbs your masters in the upper echelons might throw at you if they’re in a good mood, go ahead. Don’t expect others to stoop to your level though. Most people have dignity and won’t accept unfair conditions. They shouldn’t have to put up with an unthinking serf like you sniping at them for wanting better.

Stoop to his level? He is being pragmatic. Nor is he making any apologies for anyone. Moyest, you really pick the most pointless of battles.

That’s €1666 a month. I earn quite a decent salary, my wife stays home to mind our boys, our rent is 1k per month, I commute by train to work, take my lunch, don’t have any major debts besides a car, no credit cards or loans and absolutely couldn’t *DREAM* of saving close to that amount.

            Fair play.

It’s an Internet comment section. Calm down. If I see someone being a judgemental dykhead like your friend above, I’m probably going to say something. If that makes you upset, the Internet probably isn’t for you.

“we”. oh that’s right, i forgot the most important one: forget buying a house if you’re single.

So (averaging out) you saved almost 11k a year each & still went on holidays.

Fair play but there are not that many people who genuinely could so the same, given that elsewhere on Broadsheet today it is being claimed that the median income is about 22k, (presumably even less amongst young people).

About 2500 of that will go to the taxman.
600 euro a month rent (you’re not likely to much better in Dublin) and your sun/ski holidays will easily come to 8000 a year.

Even assuming you make no pension contributions (foolish), that’d leave that median worker with 1.36 euro a day for food, entertainment, transport etc.

          7. Twunt

I earn more than 22k, and never paid close to 8k for sun/ski holiday.

It wasn’t easy, but if you can do it the mortgage seems less difficult.

As for the crumbs for the table comments, it made me splutter my single malt.

There’s a lot of foreshortening going on with the camera used though, look at the size of yer man’s hands compared to the rest of him.
