Tower cranes across Dublin in July

Justin Comiskey, in The Irish Times, reports:

Fifty construction cranes were visible over the centre of Dublin on October 1st from the seventh floor of The Irish Times building on Tara Street.

This is an increase of four – or 9 per cent – on the previous month’s total of 46. It is up 16 (or 47 per cent) on the 34 cranes recorded on February 1st when The Irish Times Crane Survey was first launched.

Ten cranes were located north of the river Liffey – the same as last month – while the remaining 40, up four (11 per cent) from the September 1st total, were concentrated in the south docklands and along the Grand Canal.

…With the economy expected to continue its recovery this year and a number of significant developments due to enter the construction phase shortly, it is likely the number of cranes on Dublin’s skyline will increase.

The Irish Times will be conducting a crane survey once a month to track construction levels in the city.

Hard hitting journalism as usual from “The Paper Of Record”

Step 1: Stare out the window
Step 2: Write an article about what you see

A Pulitzer cannot be far away

Ah they add in nuggets of info like “Great news for everyone as rents spiral out of control” or “We’re back on track as unsustainable levels of demand cause increase in house prices”

Hi Del McG. Hope you’re well. Have you heard of the Irish comedian Dylan Moran?
In an American interview recently, Dylan Moran described his difficulty in ‘getting a read on’ Donald Trump. By this I mean, getting to understand Trump, as a person, beyond all the craziness of campaign, beyond all the silliness/danger of his persona. His innate goodness as a human being, (which Moran presumed would be there, because Trump is a human being at the end of the day.) The ‘inner workings’, if you will.
Yunno, that reminds me of something Eugene O’Neill once wrote:
“One’s outer life passes in a solitude haunted by the masks of others; one’s inner life passes in a solitude hounded by the masks of oneself.”

Anyway, getting back to the interview, Dylan Moran was there, talking about how he was trying to get a read on such things, by examining Trumps body language.
When the subject of Trumps smile came up, Dylan Moran said:
‘It’s the exact smile somebody would have…if they just told you they sh@t in the glovebox of your car.’

The reason I bring it up, I’m just wondering, who sh@t in your glovebox?

I guess it beats the recycled articles about nobodies from Norn Irn that the Indo recycles from the Belfast Telegraph.

      How very dare you!

Ulster’s third choice tighthead prop and yon Julian from UTV are NOT nobodies!

Hey! – Stop highlighting the speculator-led office construction bubble, and inevitable speculator-led collapse of the celtic phoenix-bubble.

All those cranes are mostly for office construction, thousands of new office desks, for thousands of new office workers – next problem – where are they all going to live?

  5. diddy

Cranes building offices.. but nowhere to live. I think weve reached the point now where someone coming to Dublin from the rest of the country or overseas for work will find it virtually impossible to find somewhere to rent. Unless that is they have a sweetheart deal with a mate. There a 6 or so “bedrooms” a day going up on daft and 600 people looking for each one..

Is Dublin is the most dysfunctional rental market in the OECD at time of writing?

It would be great if even 5 of these were for apartments but you know its just for more offices.

The office space bubble has to burst soon and then we are back to banks needing bailouts again.

sure aren’t they constantly banging on about how American multi-nationals encourage employees to spend more time at work hanging out playing pool and drinking craft beers? well why don’t they build little cots under the desks so employees can go the whole hog and sleep there too?

its clear as day that tax breaks/incentives to first time buyers is NOT the solution to this mess. if i was a potential first time buyer, i would buy ahead of any of these tax breaks/incentives as prop prices are just going to rise if they are introduced. i weep for this coutnry that these are even on the table.

  8. dav

It was a weekly segment in their property porn during fianna fail property bubble “crane watch” i think they called it. great to see that the blushirts are aping their ff mates in property bubble economics.

  9. Bonkers

Im going to set up an alternative construction industry metric to rival the Irish Times Cranewatch. Using hard data from Spar and Centra it will be called The Breakfast Roll Index.

  10. Frilly Keane

    Well
The Breakfast Roll Index is probably a bit to rural and low tech for the Irish Times
