Food Hall was getting pretty mank before it closed up. Sad to see the variety the Food Hall promised go and another Dealz pop up in here but it’s not as big a drop as people are making out to be.

They have one in George Street Arcade. My God I love that place and it’s greasy deliciousness….

No way, I used to go into the food hall a lot when I was in college. When did it close down? It was always busy back in the day

Over the past few years it went from ‘meals on wheels’ to ‘muck on a truck’. Empty most of the time. No loss.

    Dehipsterfication.

Looking forward to putting up my Halloween displays and embarrassing my new hipster neighbours who just moved in across the road (with their new Scandanavian windows and newly planted lawn in place of cobblelock).

Beards, side partings, tight trousers…. bleurgh… hipsterism is sheep mentality. I would go as far as saying it’s a sort of insecurity, that need to fit in and look like everyone else. The opposite of creativity.

      1. Dόn Pídgéόní

One could say going to uni, working in a bank, buying a house, having a church wedding and 2.5 children lacks creativity.

We all try to fit in somewhere. People are social, they want to belong and every generation has its subcultures.

        1. Scundered

Providing a roof over your head and your family, and getting a career are not really fashion choices though, big difference. Ironically fashion is quite the opposite of being original by it’s very nature.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Being a ‘hipster’ isn’t just fashion, much as you originally suggested. And fulfilling those roles, as a worker, home owner whatever, signal your place in society just as much someone wearing skinny jeans.

Do punks about you as much? Hippies? Skaters? Or is it just hipsters?

          2. Scundered

1 Have you a side parting?

            2 Have you a beard?

3 Is your aggression related to the tightness of the trousers, and does it subside when the top button gets released in the evenings?

          3. Dόn Pídgéόní

            1) no
            2) I should hope not being of the lady persuasion
            3) no but i guess you do have to beware of thrush. Luckily, my vagina is made of sturdy stuff.

          4. Harry Molloy

I have a side parting and a beard but work in a bank and got married in a church.
Dunno where I fit in but sure what’s new!

ah we like to slag but thank God for different types of people

          5. Vote Rep #1

People who complain about hipster probably dressed like Blur/Oasis/Grunge/whatever the-fashion-was-at-the-time but seem to think that that was completely different to the young people who wear what is in fashion.

        2. Boy M5

          “every generation has its subcultures.”

Hipster is not a subculture. It has been become VERY mainstream and conservative since the middle class kids decided it was for them.

Strange how Hipsters get very righteous about Repeal the 8th but rarely so much about the glaring economic inequality in Ireland.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Sociology and Wikipedia disagree – and subcultures generally become mainstream – one example being skinheads and punk that came out of art school, great doco on BBC St the moment about this – especially when business starts chasing the money and richer kids take it on.

Funny how people get their knickers in such a twist about hipsters and assume they dont care about multiple issues. That’s like saying all baby boomers are greedy takers who don’t care about future generations and just want to pull the ladder up after themselves.

          2. ahjayzis

I know a worrying amount of Hipster Tory voters.

There’s no depth to it, it’s just being fussy and uptheirownhole about clothes, food and music.

          3. Dόn Pídgéόní

Knowing some ‘mainstream’ hipsters doesn’t mean it’s no longer a subculture in its own right.

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

Do you have to be Irish to fit into skinny jeans now ? Get off the Island some day, there’s a whole world out there toto

    2. Starina

i worked there for a couple years way back in the day. it was never hipster. it was always just a bit mental.

  4. Goodnight Ireland

You can never have enough dealz shops.

What would you do if, as so many of us have, you need to buy a three pack of scouring pads, a kilo of peanuts and a copy of “Fatal Attraction”on dvd?

  5. Bacchus

That food hall never really took off. In one corner you might get a nice coffee, another a nice lunch but overall it seemed to be run by amateurs. Wrong part of town for it too.
Unfortunately Dealz will do better there.

    1. Scundered

Yep, a place where poor people stock up with silly amounts of halloween and xmas decorations, to run up a leccie bill that leaves them in debt for the remainder of the year.

    2. Boy M5

      “Whats dealz? Like a poundshop/eurowhatever ?”

Stop pretending you’re so southside that you don’t know.

  6. Gah!

No wonder it closed when, after being there for over fifteen years, people were still getting the name wrong. It even has a picture of the name clearly stating Epicurean Food Hall not Food Emporium! Though in the last few years, it was more Epicurean Food Hole.

If city/town centres aren’t properly managed, all you’ll get are poundshops, charity shops and fast food

    1. Neilo

Management of town centres relies on us as well – more footfall in CBDs is needed, rather than always heading out to retail parks and mega-malls in lieu of well-established retailers and services. Town centres left to local authorities can result in a litany of failed ‘grands projets’ and pay parking as far as the eye can see, as well as the unhealthy retail mix that’s afflicting these islands.

  8. Scundered

Quite a lot of brands now with names that are like text speak, always makes them look cheap, so job well done in this case.

  9. Protectthe8th

Epicurean has been terrible for years. Good addition to the street that provides a few dozen jobs the area. Fantastic stuff, look forward to getting down to check it out

  10. Frilly Keane

Are we getting a bit snobby here

Since when are any of ye too grand for Dealz
    Maybe me
    I’m a Mr Price girl
But that food hall had great intentions
And ended up a manky dump
But a handy walk thru from the ha’penny bridge ta Arnotts j
