Blank Tape, a documentary on the return of cassette as a leading physical format in experimental electronic music.
Writes Anton Spice:
Rather than make a film about the so-called “tape revival”, we wanted to hear from the makers themselves to understand what it is about tape that remains so attractive. It features labels like Sacred Tapes, Tesla Tapes and Astro:Dynamics, Warp distributors Bleep and producers Helm and Ekoplekz whose music has sprung the underground to find a home on PAN and Planet Mu.

ah would ya stop
Tapes are just stupid at this stage in the century.
Probably just for saps who collected vinyl for the only reason of it being slightly elitist.
I’m quite fond of experimental music, so I fully endorse using cassette tapes or any other medium that lends itself to being used creatively.
We’d never be where we are now without tapes.
Tapes are good.
Yeah and without Kris Kristofferson we’d never have had Aphex Twin.
Tapes are rubbish.
Tapes are big.
I was some man for dishing out romantic mix tapes back in the day.
‘Bertie’s Bedtime Blues’?
Did you go Full Dobler and belt out Tin Drum from your off-brand ghetto blaster?
Unfortunately I was more like Cyril Cusack….
A timely reference to the departed paterfamilias of Ireland’s main actin’ clan there!
Deep and serious man says: as a format it’s cheap to produce.

My favourite thing about cassettes is when they get caught up in the cassette player.
Apart from that, if only there was a way for electronic music producers to add hiss and crackle (for vinyl) to their productions. Maybe Pro Tools will have that facility in another 20 years.
Also, mp3s are so difficult to distribute, they’re so bulky, unstreamable and undownloadable and of course you require a major record label in order to put an mp3 on bandcamp or youtube.
Putting a downloadable cassette on bandcamp is much more convenient.
And of course it’s impossible to have artwork if you don’t have a physical cassette.
Personally, for each of my mp3 albums on my portable player – I carry a little plastic box and a little piece of paper with artwork and information.
Before listening to any mp3 track I simply locate the corresponding plastic box and little piece of paper and hold them in my hands. It makes me feel like I am holding sound waves in my hands.
I’m a bit weird though, I also like to hold smells and tastes in my hands.
