‘A Load Of Codswallop’

A graphic outlining the number of females on State-funded sports boards in yesterday’s Irish Times

What a load of codswallop. The proposal by Minister of State for Sport Patrick O’Donovan that 30 per cent of senior positions in Irish sporting organisations must be held by women within the next few years is poorly thought out.

First, he talks about fairness and equality, but then plucks that 30 per cent figure out of the air. The number of women participating in and involved in the administration of the various sports differs greatly.

Rather than a random figure of 30 per cent, the number of women in senior positions should be proportionate to their numbers in a particular sport.

Second, and more importantly, the Minister and his colleagues should perhaps put their own house in order before meddling in the affairs of sporting organisations. The population of Ireland is 50.1 per cent female, yet only 22 per cent of TDs are women.

I would take Mr O’Donovan’s proposal seriously if he achieved fairness and equality in Dáil Éireann and led the sporting organisations by example, rather than indulging in publicity stunts.

Next Broadsheet will required to have gender quotas from everyone. Thankfully us trolls are gender fluid.

Well there is certainly no denying that, if the LJG uprising of Earlier This Year is anything to go by, never mind the recent Trump support fiasco.

hey, sorry to put you on the spot, but you you have form. thought you might spice up things a bit . Clancey handle should be outsourced to eager ones, really, don’t you think?

I know this should be addressed to the paper of record but is there a reason the LGFA is not shown in that graphic?

They are not one the top 20 receipients of state funding. Only the top 20 are included in the graphic that has been used in the media.

      1. Paul

For such a large organization that is hard to believe. I know they are getting more funding next year but still

At a recent meeting to set up an Under 8 girls GAA team the club were looking for volunteers and mentors. For about 25 U8 girls they got 5 men and zero women putting themselves forward. At my local school the parents committee is about 90% women. Different people do different things and I don’t think quotas are the way to go.

Well there ya go, that’s illustrative of probably the main reason why the stats look the way they do

      1. On The Buses

I agree, but the post structuralist third wave feminists would say that is due to ingrained patriarchy.

Is the Quota a minimum 30% of one Gender or minimum 30% female? Are Camogie Ireland going to need some more men on the board?

Seems fair enough to ensure female representation on boards for dual sex sports.
Might be tough for the snowflakes and their transexual agenda, seen as most mature women see this agenda as fundamentally anti-women. For example in the UK several men have declared that they feel female and have demanded to be allowed on female rugby team, clearly allowing 6’4″ 17st men on to womens rugby teams will not encourage biological women participation in sport.

Fair point CousinJack… seems most are forgetting that there is a ‘transiton period’, discussed here – https://www.reddit.com/r/asktransgender/comments/1239ue/a_question_about_a_transitioning_female_to_male/

      And this too… http://www.goffrugbyreport.com/news/trans-community-weighs-usa-rugby-rules
“World Rugby and USA Rugby believe that there’s no problem if someone undergoes sex reassignment before puberty. In the rugby world’s eyes, that person is the gender they have transitioned to. These rules become more intricate once someone undergoes sex reassignment after puberty. A transgender player is only eligible to participate in the gendered team they chose if they meet the following criteria: Surgical anatomical changes have been made to external genitalia and gonadectomy, official authorities have legally recognized them as their transitioned sex, and hormonal therapy has been continuous for at least two years.”

Very seasonal with snowflake references. Makes me want to go skiing.
Can men quit being cute and fragile snowflakes themselves? and women stop dressing in perennial victim suits? Actually, women should keep the suits till the 08th repeal. But only till then.

    1. Clampers Outside!

Are you telling women what to do with their attitudes, or victim suits, with regard to the holy “8th”…. >_<

As Jim Kirk would say… "my God man! Are you out of your vulcanised protected space!"

Sport is massive in this country.
Each of these bodies receives tax payers money.
There is no denying that sport is used for networking opportunities for business and politics.
Running an organisation, any organisation, does benefit from a diverse board in terms of less corruption

You don’t have to play the sport to run the organisation that organises it.

Soccer, rugby and gaa – yes. I don’t see many executives heading to the National Aquatic Centre to watch a bit of freestyle.

Maybe it’s just me, but how many women are there in the BS staff?

      A cookie for you.

      Gender quotas for everyone else.

Get on it lads. I’m still waiting for my invitation to be resident Novella. Or failing that, a ‘Dear Millie’ corner.

I’ll have you know I’m a real woman and everything.
