A livestream of Dublin-born Belfast-based recovering alcoholic and drug addict John Edwards currently who is ‘buried alive’ to highlight mental heath and addiction issues.
The specially-made coffin is 8ft long by 3.5ft high and 4ft wide – and equipped with electricity and broadband to allow him to broadcast to the outside world.
A special tube has been fitted to provide fresh air and supplies.
Mr Edwards said he spent over 20 years as an addict and alcoholic – adding that the experience has allowed him to understand and help others facing similar difficulties.
“I was homeless, suicidal, abused, been in psychiatric hospitals,” he wrote on his website. “I have had cancer twice, a liver transplant, Hep C but now recovered; I have witnessed many of my friends and loved ones dying.”
John;s burial will continue until tomorrow, Friday at 2pm.
How does he pee?
More as we get it.

This used to happen for real to people by mistake. During the 18th and 19th Centuries, epidemics were wiping people out but not all were confirmed dead before burial – probably unconscious and assumed dead. Given the infectious spread of disease, there was no time to hang around so they were quickly buried. (That is why we have such a thing as a ‘wake’ – it was to see if the person woke up.) After exhumation (common because of grave-sharing) it was found that they were well and truly dead but there were scratch marks on the inner side of the coffins. Because of this fear of being buried alive, one method was to tie one end long piece of string to the ‘dead’ person’s hand, lead the other end up to the surface and tie it to a bell….this is the source of the oul saying ‘saved by the bell’.
I fail to see how burying yourself alive highlights mental health issues. But I hope he has a bell all the same.
there were some top class taphephobes, back in the day, and a common request among them was to have their arteries cut open before burial, just in case.
