£150 grand a year at the BBC? Yes, but it’s London, what with the fluctuating price of caviar (I didn’t know this was a thing) and the cost of maintaining a million pound mansion in Putney, it seems entirely reasonable that people who read Autocue earn this amount. I operate Autocue for a living and almost never quibble over the price of caviar.

Also, “Come on Tyrone” – a sneaky GAA reference there.

I did a conference thing in Tenerife back in the 90s, presented by Paxman, whilst going over his script, he asked me how much do people (famous types) generally charge to attend and MC at a corporate thing. I told him that Victoria Wood was £30,000 a night, Coogan was similar, and demanded helicopters, limos and such. Paxman was aghast – he told me he was only getting £4,500 for his two days. I almost pitied the guy as he flew business class home, sipping champagne – paid for, by Glaxo.

What do you think badatmemes would get for an after-dinner speech?

Escorted from the premises?

I’ve been to a few where the MC was ‘escorted’ out. Jack Dee was my last, he was a tad overly not funny.
