          Benitez never wanted to sign him but the owners went ahead anyway. Pity Robbie had to pay the price.

          true, but that he’d purposely humiliate and jeopardise the career of a decent (not a world-beater but better than most forwards in the premier league at the time) and honest player out of petulance didn’t say much for benitez. and it’s why I’ll take some pleasure out of his inevitable sacking before Christmas.

            At the risk of whataboutery, any of Rafa’s sins pale into insignificance compared to the carry on of Mourinho over the years and I doubt you want him to be sacked by Christmas:)

            true. but Mourinho would be the first, I suspect, to admit and acknowledge that he’s an absolute weenie-woo. and it’s a long time since Man Utd even tried pretending it was anything other than a horrible proponent of low-class profiteering. there’s a bit more to Liverpool – and benitez’s conduct was way below it. (and I’m not a Man Utd fan, by the way)

            Day in, day out, managers don’t select players that they don’t rate – never mind those that they didn’t even want at the club. Benitez was put in a difficult position. His beef was with the board and, like I say, it’s a pity that Robbie was the fall guy. That was not Benitez’s fault.

            He’s just not that good of a player. I mean by Irish standards he was a great goal scorer with a keen nose for goal and a fantastic temperament. But it was with Berbatov that he really played his best stuff.
