Reeling In The Clicks

Jamie writes:

You may remember from a few years ago a video of a fella dancing on a table on the train to Galway.

I was one of the musicians playing that day and we all enjoyed the little bit of attention the video got at that time.

We wondered at the time, with all the hits on YouTube and Facebook how much money the video was making for the person who uploaded it.

Well, we found out..

A couple of years ago, we heard from Tanya (uploader) when she reached out to Neil (dancer) on Facebook:

“Hi Gary & Neil – I hope all is well with you and the crazies from the train?! Just a quick message to let you know that I got an email from Storyful who have signed up the Irish Dancing video. I have been getting literally pennies every month for views for the last few years…BUT this month I got a statement and somebody has paid €240 for ‘individual licensed sales’!!

I’m not sure what this means but probably a TV company. I now have built up €254 in the account and wanted to know if you guys had a charity in mind that you would like it donated to? Personally I’m a ‘Medecins Sans Frontieres’ woman but if you have some special charity – I can hand over the dosh”

How sound is that!?

We directed her to Laura Lynn that time..

Now, we just got another message from her the other day:

“Hi lads! Hope all well with you and you had a fabulous summer! I have been getting regular account statements regarding the ‘Irish dancing on the train to Galway’ video and since the last big one it’s just been pennies.

I missed the July statement and have only just noticed a royalties payment of €258!! It should be in my account in the next few days if you want to designate charity – I would be delighted to donate the dosh”

So, we (the musicians and dancer) would like to call out Tanya for her complete acts of soundness over the last few years..

Maybe a few more eyeballs on the video, will get a few more pennies to charity.

Jesus Paps you’re an awful sour individual.

I prefer a bit of good news myself, than perpetual doom, gloom and nuclear war.

Jesus , Just keep the money and buy something nice. 250 euro will just go into some charity directors expense account. No good will come of it.
