Wondering why this got trivialised with the ‘hic’ phrase and the Withnail & I link. Around one person per week dies from alcohol poisoning in Ireland – 3 people per day die from alcohol related causes.
It someone was going around endangering lives by any other means, I don’t think it would get the comedy treatment here.
Most of us now understand that when you trivialise racism, it helps promote & normalise racism, when you trivialise sexism, that helps promote & normalise sexism. So why do we still trivialise alcohol harm? I just don’t get it.

Interestingly, Richard E. Grant is allergic to alcohol. Bruce Robinson (the director of Withnail & I) demanded that Grant be drunk during his read through/audition. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with this. Cheap anything – Caveat Emptor!

He wasn’t.

The scene of him being arrested ‘i assure you officer, I’ve only had a few ales’ was filmed after they made grant drink a few pints.

“COUNTERFIT” Alcohol? Is the sign itself counterfeit?
A few years ago, fake alcohol killed 51 people in the Czech Republic and Poland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Czech_Republic_methanol_poisonings
I remember that there was a bottle handed around at a bonfire here one year and a few people became very ill or even died due to ethanol poisoning.
Stay safe, folks.
not able for your gargle
Yeah I remember that. Was a good night (f)all in (f)all though.
Fake news!
