Leo Varadkar at the Fine Gael ‘President’s Dinner’ event on Saturday night.

“I’ll never apologise for standing up for people who get up early in morning, who work nights and weekends, who aspire for something better for themselves and their families”.

“It’s their taxes that fund public services and keep our welfare system afloat and they deserve a break. And they know which party is on their side.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at the weekend.

I woke at 6.45am this morning.. Leo would be proud.

He’s so inspiring he’d make you want to do a roll over…

Well I woke up at twelve o’clock at night, ate half a handful of freezing cold gravel, and then worked twenty-four hours at mill for fourpence every six years.

      2. Brother Barnabas

I woke up a little after 3 (not sure of the exact time), and then again around 4.30. And at least 4 other occasions between then and 6.30. And that was when I decided, fupp this, I may as well just get up.

I know Leo would be proud of me.

But now it’s hitting 1 and I’m fading. Am thinking of a 20 minute kip, but I don’t want to disappoint Leo.

I never seem to get much sleep at all

I think it’s only people on the dole have time for that

        2. Elizabeth mainwaring

Binky Sweetnam at Milltown had a similar problem to your good self, dearie. Apparently his prostrate was the issue. You might like to have it checked out in Fitzwilliam Square.

I got up at 6.30 and all I could think of was Leo! It fact it was the thought of Leo that got me out of bed

  3. Spaghetti Hoop

Here Leo. Some of us don’t go to bed at all. (Not looking at anyone in particular on Broadsheet).

the budget doesn’t reflect this sentiment. as someone in the squeezed middle, getting up early, making 50k per annum, I don’t feel any relief from this budget.

      1. man

because i earn a good salary, but am just about getting by. I’m the ‘squeezed middle’ and he said FG are helping people just like me. But I’m saying theyre not so he’s full of rubbish. Don’t get me wrong, I’d happily pay the tax im paying if we had good services etc., but they’re taking my tax and soceity is clearly not seeing much return on it. theyre wasting our money on things like irish water and what not.

        1. pedeyw

Yep, I’d prefer the extra €2 a week I get with the new budget was channeled into public and affordable housing, for example.

        2. Anomanomanom

But what you spend your money on is your business. I know individual cases can differ but if 50k is only barely getting you by, then your over spending somewhere. But I do agree with the waste of tax money.

          1. Gimme Shelter

How do you make that out anom?

Please set out your guidelines for what you think is an acceptable level of expenditure by man.

          2. Anomanomanom

Not for a man, for everyone. Its simple spend with in your means. Its really not hard. Personally I try to make sure I have at least 10% of my after tax weekly wage spare. Its not much but it gets me what I want after the essentials.

      2. curmudgeon

Because taxing nearly fifty percent of that is absolutely crippling, and somehow were supposed to be able to afford mortgages and save for a pension. Our public services do not reflect the tax we pay in either. Taxes that were introduced due to the recession have not disapeared, VAT is still @23% and USC is only receiving a cut. Frankly the whole system is utterly unfair to the median industrial waged private sector worker.

        1. Anomanomanom

Its unfair to every work. But nobody get taxed nearly 50%. The high rate kicks in after a certain limit then you taxed on earning above that limit. But I get your point.

Did he announce his dawn raids and round ups of anybody who claims welfare?
That would have gone down well, along with a an announcement of record numbers of evictions and homless citizens.
They would have given him a standing ovation for that.. blushirts

  6. Nigel

And as the recovery limps along we look forward to people getting up earlier and earlier to take longer and longer to get through the growing gridlock and underfunded public transport.

  7. newsjustin

Is he talking about getting up early in the morning AND working nights and weekends? Or shift workers?

Because working the round of the clock is nothing to aim for/hold up as an ideal. Unless it’s for a pure passion project/vocation.

Maybe a party that rewards hard work but also helps people feel secure, healthy and happy with their lives should be the aim.

(C’mere, any jobs going in that spin unit there??)

  8. edalicious

What about those who have to get up early and work long hours on poverty wages to just keep their heads above water, Leo? Or is it only those who get up early and take home a large wedge that are deserving of your support?

  9. bisted

…the Leo Communications Unit have announced that everyone who gets up early in the morning can have an extra hour in bed from next weekend…curtesy of Leo…

  10. phil

‘people who get up early in morning, who work nights and weekends, who aspire for something better for themselves and their families’

I think I know who they are… I wonder who the other people are , and is he suggesting that he is not the Taoiseach for those people? If he is not standing up for the ‘other’ people, is he against them, and if he is , what form does that take I wonder…

I thought in a Republic, the PM represents all citizens, maybe Im being too pedantic …

  11. Burnt Cheese

If you’re working that much Leo then you’re not doing your job right and should be fired. Someone who can do it in more reasonable hours should be hired instead.

  12. nellyb

It’s a typo, it should read “I’ll never apologise for standing up to people who get up early in morning”

  13. Candy Crush Guru

What is with this Pink, Lilac and Purple back drops these event planners insist on?

It looks more like a TV3 Fashion Show.

So what are they going to do for those hard workers, land them with more taxes most likely. A few extra bank holidays would be nice.
