I hope I can live long enough to experience the sheer ecstasy that Gary Neville displayed when the linesman awarded that second peno to Spurs.

Whats with the back page headlines? Nothing interesting on the front pages of these particular newspapers?

What can The Irish Times possibly have to say on Una Thurman and Harvey Weinstein that hasn’t already been said yesterday in The NY Times? Quentin Tarantino comes out of that looking like a complete creep too.

Examiner: Attracting foreign investors to towns ‘challenge’ for IDA.

A pretty good piece by Padraig Hoare about the Dublin mindset until he goes into a Cork Cork Cork mantra. I know The Examiner is based in Cork but it has been served pretty well in comparison to the midlands and the North West.

Dundalk is the largest town in Ireland and has nothing but call centres which given its road infrastructure, office space and available labour skills, is downright bizarre. Even with that, the main reason PayPal is in Dundalk is because of a local woman who is a PayPal executive was in a position to argue the case.

FDI is not some gift that can be magiced up or conferred upon a lot of rural towns, despite the wishful thinking of many a councillor or TD. There are particular locational factors, infrastructural needs, skills availability, international connectivity, access to markets, quality of life, etc that are key to these decisions. Ultimately there needs to be a sound business argument for locating in the sticks. The sad reality is that few locations outside of urban centres offer it.

Something that politicians can actually do is to enhance the business environment for indigenous industry and most particularly for micro enterprises and the self employed. There’s much that can be done here but little in the way of the photo opportunities much desired by the gombeen class.
