Yesterday.
In the Sunday Business Post.
Colette Sexton reported:
Independent News and Media (INM) is considering the introduction of a paywall on its news sites.
The newspaper company, which publishes the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent and the Sunday World, as well as a range of local newspapers, has given its content away for free on its websites up to this point.
…A new corporate strategy for INM completed by EY recommended that the newspaper group charge for some of its online content.
The EY project, entitled The One Programme, saw key executives and editors in the company interviewed. It was critical of current innovation and digital strategy within the group.

They want you to pay for state sponsored fake news..
lamentable..
Interestingly, the linked article is behind a paywall!
Curiously I’d pay to read the Business Post, but the Indo group, not so much…
Really? How would you keep up with all things Rosanna Davison?
Where would we get our click-bait? And celebrity news from social media?
Oh, wait.. Never mind.
They are dead right, too. This business model of giving content away for free has had a lasting damage on the free press: good journalism costs money.
(that being said, I would be unlikely to pay money for an online subscription for any of INM’s newspapers, though the Sunday World is quite good)
Can you define ‘free press’?
de Sunday wurdeld? You having a laugh?
The Sunday World, although a bit tabloid-y in some of their content, do a strong line in investigative journalism. They broke the story on Callelly fiddling his expenses and a few other big ones in recent years.
fair enough, I know they are good with the criminal stuff alright.
Sunday World. Trash.
Trouble is that bad journalism also seems to cost a lot of money.
Who in their right mind would pay to read Barry Egan or Brendan O’Connor?
haha yeah I wonder if the rebranded Ernst & Young also do the accounts for the Indo…perfect fit that if so
EY, the FFG favorites.
It is KPMG, although all the big 4 firms are useless. Auditing is like a chocolate teapot.
In my experience, external audits are a tick-box-exercise. It is the approach of the internal auditor that I take seriously… Our unit misses NOTHING.
That’s what they want you to think.
Sunday World has not been free for quite a while now, maybe a year or so?
Also, is Sunday Life not in the stable too? Or is that a secret?
join a library and get all the papers online for free.
I put up my own paywall against INM products years ago. Why not do the same?
they already have a datawall on the opinion peices I’d be delighted if those trolls went behind a paywall
