We Have Kept Faith With The Past

at

Last night.

Garda station, Pearse Street, Dublin 2

Fahy Bumbury tweetz:

We witnessed this scene upon leaving a Garda interview. Such a sad sight, particularly given the adverse weather conditions expected, yet reflective of the Dublin of today. Make an effort to help those less fortunate and in need where possible – that’s our ethos!

FF haven’t been in power for seven years…

(it’s true that all three parties have councillors elected to DCC, who have responsibility for homeless services, but somehow I don’t think that is what the poster meant)

      1. Sue.

FF are in power at the moment. They’re holding up the government. They could withdraw their support at any time. They won’t. They’re essentially in coalition with the Blueshirts.

        1. Cian

Almost 22,000 council houses were sold to the tenants under the tenant purchase scheme which ran from 1995 to 2012 – which depleted council stocks

    2. dan

There is not a city in the world without homeless people. It’s a global problem and has been for decades, if not centuries.

      1. Pluto

Fup off – head in the sand there’s nothing anyone can do, it’s nothing to do with the policies of FG/FF at all…..

        You lot make me sick

      2. Snippity

dan, you probably grew up through the Thatcher years, so you wouldn’t remember that it was unknown to see someone sleeping in a doorway on cardboard before her ‘reforms’ in Britain and Ireland’s infection with those ‘reforms’.

Ireland had some of the worst tenements in Europe but our first governments cleared them rapidly by building excellent housing from the 1920s and 1930s on. It was only whoever persuaded the whole Dail to take a big drink of stupid in your youth that ended this with the mass cheap sell-off of council houses, which not only removed a stock of well-built housing for rent, but also added to the housing bubble by being immediately re-sold for double the price.

Until the councils build houses – themselves, not via developers, who don’t build to such a high standard, and want to tear profit out of every build – homelessness is going to get worse, and bring with it attendant problems of disease and crime. Just pray that you don’t yourself become part of it.

Bumbury sounds like a minor Carry On character. Bambury, perhaps? The tweeter is spot on: we all need to do our bit.

  2. Cian

    What is the issue?
The Garda station was warm and they let yer man stay in there. Perhaps they were organising transportation to a hostel and he fell asleep.

Should they have kicked him onto the street? Arrested him?

    1. The Ghost of Starina

The fact that the situation is desperate enough that sleeping on the floor under a chair in a Garda station is the best this fella can get.

          1. Cian

            Well I can’t answer for blueshirts…

..but, yup I have a smattering of empathy. It seems to be the “faux outrage”-gene that I’m missing.

  3. Paps

You ask the lad for permission before putting him on the internet? You offer to help him out some way Bumbury?..

    1. Tony

I submit m’lud that my client’s stated Ethical Policy – while suggesting that an ‘effort’ be made to ‘help the less fortunate and in need’ – also states that such help be given ‘where possible’. In this instance, rendering help was not possible as my client was already ten minutes late for dinner at Patrick Guilbauds.

Interesting. This photo was taken in a Garda Station. Is it permitted to take photographs in a Garda Station?
Or does a Garda Station count as ‘a public space’?

  4. Rob_G

Police in Belgium are currently arresting any homeless people they find sleeping in the streets, but for their own good, to stop them freezing to death.

Sure, this man’s situation is not ideal and in no way a permanent solution, but for the moment he is warm and safe and out of the bitter cold. Fahy Bambury’s use of this man’s image (I presume without his permission) – with added awkward symbolism of the Pearse portrait – is well, tacky.

    1. Johnny

      They haven’t arrested one,not one !
Do you have a link to the current wave of arrests in Belgium off homeless people, being homeless is NOT a crime.

      1. Johnny

Here ya go Rob,it’s a constant stream off disinformation and govt propaganda by you !

“Homeless people who stay outside in these conditions risk hypothermia and can freeze to death,” said mayor Vincent De Wolf. As it turns out, police didn’t have to go as far as arresting the 10 people it ultimately picked up, taking them to a space to spend the night, arranged by the municipality.“

Not exactly arresting homeless people now are they !

I’d say this is more an addiction problem than homelessness. This is where the government really fails it’s citizens.

  6. postmanpat

So that’s who the picture is. Wasn’t he in love with young boys? I like to think he kept his urges under control and didn’t abuse his status and impunity to any assaults on kids…. but …you know…different times , practically no risk to predators 20 years ago let alone a hundred hears. You would have to assume he did and therefore curb your enthusiasm for these legendary Irish hero’s. People like Fahy see a symbol of freedom, juxtaposed with a image of poverty which is two separate things so its not really clever. Worse , all I see is an outdated thought model of nationalism hero worship , in this case a blown up sepia photo of a probably highly active sexual predator in his day hanging on a wall and a homeless man sleeping rough under a bunch of seats. Maybe this man ended up this way due to mental health issues and/or drug abuse stemming from child sexual abuse, you would never know, and if that was the case, this camera phone image takes on whole new meaning.

    1. ollie

“probably highly active sexual predator”. Are you a pedo postman pat? Do you have urges? Just asking, unlike yourself who decided to assume.

  7. postmanpat

HA! I doubt it though , The guards cover up accusations of inappropriate relationships between grown men and groups of young fellas.

Contingency Plans Activated for Extreme Weather
List of Enhanced Day ServicesMonday 26th February 2018

DRHE – Contingency Plans activated for Storm Emma and #BeastFromTheEast

The impact of severe weather can be immediately life threatening to people who are rough sleeping and it is essential to have a coordinated response in order to mitigate against the risk of exposure. The DRHE has coordinated and implemented contingency plans that will operate for the duration of the Yellow Status Warning. These include:-

    • 125+ emergency placements specifically targeted at people sleeping rough, these can be accessed through our Central Placement Service in Parkgate Hall which is open to provide information and assistance. Where possible these placements will be made for the week and are provided in facilities across Dublin by the Salvation Army, Peter McVerry Trust, Crosscare, Dublin Simon, Depaul, Private Emergency Operators & Merchants Quay Ireland.
    • Our Freephone service will open earlier this week from 10 am to 2 am
    • All the main service providers have agreed to keep accommodation open for 24 hours period including utilising communal spaces for supplementary shelter
    • Fingal, South Dublin and DunLaoghaire Rathdown County Councils have arranged for additional accommodation to be provided
    • Dublin City Council is providing an additional overflow facility at a City Centre Sports Centre which will be managed by Peter McVerry Trust
    • We have contacted all Private Emergency Accommodation Providers who will remain open and accessible during the Yellow Status Warning period
    • Enhanced day services will also be operating – see attached
    • The Housing First Teams will have two additional teams operating each day for the week

We are asking the public if they come across people sleeping rough to please report to
    http://www.homelessdublin.ie/report-rough-sleeper

We are in contact with all service providers, days services, drop in centres and outreach teams to inform them what enhanced services are available for service users. We will use @homelessdublin for further updates as required.

We are confident that there will be sufficient additional emergency spaces for anyone that seeks shelter. The DRHE funded Housing First outreach teams (Focus Ireland & Peter McVerry Trust) are operating throughout the day to engage with people at risk of rough sleeping and provide them with shelter. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing cooperation and assistance from our partners in the charity sector including the many service providers and all those involved in the voluntary sector.

We have asked Private Emergency Providers to remain open 24 / 7 for the week also (meals will be provided). The majority of services are 24/7, but there are also extended day services – see below.

    Please Note:

    • MQI Extended Day Service will open on a 24hr basis from Tuesday 27th to March 2nd for clients – details to be confirmed tomorrow 27/2/18

My Granny lives alone in a 5 bedroom house, with 3 bathrooms and 2 living rooms. my mother in law lives alone in a 5 bedroom house, 2 bathrooms and 2 living rooms. Nobody should have to move out of the house if they want to but is there something the govt. can do to help people downsize to free up property? Where my granny lives in Rathfarnham is literally 4-5 bedroom gaffs, as far as the eye can see inhabited by 2 or 1 elderly individuals. Selling and scaling down at that age is stressful, confusing and a major hassle but do any other cities help with that sort of thing? Apart from that scheme where they stick your granny in a nursing home and knock a grand off the price of her house every week.

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I probably live in a house backing on to your granny’s place. There are about 3 of our tiny terraced places backing on to the back garden of one of those houses. You can see the clothes of one person hanging on the line…Wouldn’t mind a swap! But as you say, it’s a huge thing to move house, especially when you’re old.

    2. scottser

if it’s private property the state won’t interfere. she can sell on the private market and choose another with the help of her solicitor and estate agent. she could always get in touch with age action or other advocate services to help her through the process.

      1. postmanpat

Owner of a 4 or 5 bedroom house in Rathfarnham? Rich old ladies need free government help and the blueshirts wont help her. For SHAME Ireland.

        1. Bort

Not cash rich I can tell you. They bought the house for 5 grand 60 years ago. That was the height of their wealth.

          1. postmanpat

Boo Hoo, Id love to be filthy equity rich at that age. These auld dears will be grand. They just don’t have any gumption because they never had to work a day in their lives or pay a bill as Harold did everything, god rest him.

          2. Neilo

@Postman Pat: You mean apart from raising a family and educating, clothing, loving and feeding them while their spouse paid 65p in the pound to fund generations of buroohawks? Yes, quite the bunch of filthy parasites: to the gibbets post haste, don’t forget your knitting.

        2. scottser

no need to be a dick postmanpat. elderly grandparents are seriously vulnerable to getting ripped off and worse.

          1. postmanpat

Jesus. we go from worrying about rough sleepers to defending rich, kept old ladies living in relative mansions with fuel allowances and 250 a week cash state pension and no overheads., compared to the flat dweller .sorry.. apartment dwellers a lot of people are rotting way in and will be in negative enquiry for decades But you’ll only get sympathy if your a rich or poor work shy bum in this country.

    3. H

Perhaps they could think about sharing their homes with a younger person, they get company and the security of having someone else in the house and the younger person gets somewhere to live – win/win. You can see how it works in the UK here – https://homeshareuk.org/
