That’s hard to watch as the camera is panned down low. Or whatever the technical term is.
Valparaiso is a lovely city. Rough in parts, but cool.

If anyone’s ever seen that show Profugos/Fugitives, it offers a great look at many Chilean cities and towns including ‘The Val’

      It’s a poetry moment:

Tháinig Long ó Valparaiso. Padraig De Brun translated from the poem “The Ship” by Oliver St John Gogarty.

      Tháinig long ó Valparaiso,
Scaoileadh téad a seol sa chuan,
Chuir a hainm dom i gcuimhne
Ríocht na gréine, tír na mbua.

She came, a ship from Valparaiso,
She furled her sails close by the strand,
Her name was a kingdom of the sun
Her game was a promised land.

‘‘Gluais, ’’ ar sí, ‘‘ar thuras fada
      Liom ó scamall is ó cheo;
      Tá fé shleasa gorm‑Andes
      Cathair scáfar, glé mar sheod.’’

’’Go,’’ said she, far far away
      With me from clouds and from fog;
There lies on slopes of Andean blue
A shaded city, bright as a jewelled box.’’

Ach bhíos óg is ní imeoinnse,
Am an dóchais, tús mo shaoil,
Chreideas fós go raibh i ndán dom
Iontaisí na ndán is na scéal.

But I was young and would not sail,
A time of hope, as my life began,
I still believed they were meant for me
Those wonders of every poem and tale.

Ghluais an long thar linnte mara
Fad ó shin is a crann mar ór,
Scríobh a scéal ar phár na hoíche,
Ard i rian na réiltean mór.

The ship set sail on the ocean wide
Long long ago with its mast of gold,
It wrote its tale on the scroll of night,
Along the tracks of the gleaming stars.

      Fillfidh sí arís chugam, áfach,
      Chífead cathair bhán fén sléibh
      Le hais Mara na Síochána,
      Creidim fós, beagnach, a Dhé.

She will come back to me, however,
I’ll see a fair city on the mountain side
      Where the Pacific Ocean gleams,
Oh God I believe it, almost, still.
