Here is a quote from the heroine Ahed Tamimi, who is on the front of the Morning Star: “Whether it is stabbings or suicide bombings or throwing stones, everyone must do his part and we must unite in order for our message to be heard that we want to liberate Palestine”

A true hero and a fantastic role model.

AKA Shirley Temper. A meal ticket for the Tamimi clan who’ve been pushing her out to confront soldiers since she was 8 years old. And how come Corbyn’s Press TV car crash interview didn’t make it into the Inglesi papers ?

        1. Nigel

Obviously It’s morally superior to support heavily armed troops gunning down civilians who may or may not be throwing stones.

          1. rotide

Generally trying to kill suicide bombers with kindness doesn’t end well. Sure, you could approach them and give them the old pat down, but you probably won’t be doing a second one.

          2. Nigel

You don’t radiclaise young people into supporting or becoming suicide bombers with kindness either. Shooting unarmed civilians who may or may not be throwing stones? That’ll help it along!

          3. rotide

You appear to think that radicalisation only works one way.

In the same way that people are radicalised into terrorism and violent protest, when the mob approaching you is as far as you are concerned made up of people that are hell bent on not only murdering you and your family but physically destroying your country and driving its people into the sea, that’s going to make it a littler easier to pull the trigger.

Israel is not like northern ireland and never has been. Both sides are completely fubar and as usual it’s completely innocent people who end up paying the hardest price for the leaders extremist ideals

          4. Nigel

You have absolutely no reason to assume I think it only works one way, since an utterly unavoidable reality of the I/P conflict is the escalation and entrenchment of radicalisation of both sides. I would suggest the major way I/P is unlike NI is that NI was not the focus of major geoplitical powers and ideologies struggling to exert control over the region through support of either side. NI had no strategic value to anyone.

      1. rotide

…with rubber bullets while throwing stones at police from inside the house they were all arrested in.

” Israel is a morally bankrupt concept. ”
Not bad for the only democracy in the Middle East.

    1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

When antifa scum and communists keep moving left, you end up on the right. Just a bunch of thugs who think they are above the law and who think suicide bombings are justifiable as long as the targets are Israeli Jews.

      1. edalicious

Ah the classic “I’m not right wing, everyone else is just really far left” school of mental gymnastics.

        1. Termagant

“Would you look at those moderate centrists at it again, rampaging through the streets beating people up”

  2. GiggidyGoo

Gavin Duffy eh? Mr. FG. I won’t be investing in him. The attempt is to dilute the votes and to try stack the odds in favour of Higgins.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Not officially alright. He is beholden to both FG and FF. FG are beholden to FF and vice versa. Now let’s see which four councils back him. This is a vote-scattering excercise. Duffy hasn’t a hope and knows it. Big millionaire business man takes years out of his business life to become a full time figurehead. I don’t think so. And judging by his soft interview on RTÉ this morning his spiel is as convincing as the worst spiel he’d have experienced from worst of the the wannabes on Dragons Den

          2. Frilly Keane

I though he was on Bill Cullen’s apprentice thing

‘didn’t know he was a Dragons Den chair holder

            and tbh
I’m surprised Norah Casey hasn’t been along ta’ say she’s NOT running for President

          3. Cian

“Big millionaire business man takes years out of his business life to become a full time figurehead. I don’t think so.”
            *cough* *cough* Trump *cough*

          4. rotide

Will you bend whichever four councils back him to your invented narrative?

FF and FG both know that it’s pointless running anyone against Higgins but more to the point, what difference does it make to them whether its Higgins, Dennis O Brien or a lesbian marxist pescatarian installed as president? (Spoiler: none)

          1. Cian

            I dunno, they seem similar:
            ✓ Commander of defence forces
            ✓ Signs legislation
✓ Voted democratically by the peoples
✓ Meets and greets foreign dignitaries
✓ Lives in a big white house (Irish-born architect)
✓ Appointing members of government, judges and other officials.

new website tie’s together all of DOB’s charitable work-its horrible.

“I was brought up with a set of ethical and moral values which have led me to believe that what financial fortune my circumstances have allowed me the privilege of enjoying has always given rise to a proportionate obligation, to my fellow man, to the world in which I am living and the needs of those not merely less fortunate than me, but whose ability to live fulfilling and dignified lives have been compromised by the circumstances in which their lives have begun.”

I suspect there will be plenty of people to pick fruit and vegetables after Brexit. There will certainly be higher unemployed and supply and demand means retail prices for fresh produce will sky rocket so wages will most likely be higher.

  4. johnny

What does ‘suspect’ mean in this context-that you haven’t a clue but kinda think/feel there’s 60,000 Brits just dying to pick fruit ?
Wages are already a problem as sterling has plummeted, there’s strawberries rotting in the fields of Blighty.

“Britain today is completely dependent on foreign workers to pick its fruit and vegetables. According to the National Farmers Union, an industry lobbying group, of the 60,000 seasonal workers in the fields last year, barely one percent was British. The vast majority come from Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria and Romania.”

(PS-read the link-google the heading if you’ve used up your WaPo freebies)

In the event of a hard Brexit the problem is easily solved by issuing short-term work visas.
Most fruit and veg pickers are only in Blighty for a few months at a time even now and return every year to the same farms with their own native gang-masters and organisation.
The long-term problem of unchecked immigration of cheap labour is that it keeps down wages across the board for all workers – it’s one of the reasons why Jeremy Corbyn has always been in favour of Brexit.
Welcome to the next couple of years of Project Fear 2:0

  6. johnny

Short-Term work visa to whom-Africans or Turks because that’s basically the only choices.

“Maurel said some Brits work in less taxing farm jobs — as logistics managers or office staff — but even those higher-paying, indoor jobs are mostly taken by Eastern Europeans these days.

She said the rare British workers who give the fruit and vegetable harvest a try, “literally don’t last a week.”

Hughes and three other university students are the only Brits harvesting berries at the Snell family farm this summer, out of a workforce of 300.

“That’s quite something, isn’t it?” said Christine Snell who owns the award-winning, environmentally sensitive farm with her husband, Anthony. “We want to get the message across: If we could recruit British workers, we would, but we cannot.””

    1. Ollie Cromwell

It’s the same the world over.I once spent a very enjoyable few weeks picking tobacco in Canada.
There were no Canadians doing that job either but they didn’t allow unchecked migration into their country.
You do know East Europeans could be allowed in on short-term visas after Brexit …

      1. johnny

I know just having a bit off fun:)
The white paper on Bexit states that the govt is prepared to allow EU citizens travel/work for temporary work, interesting that the WaPo(Bezos/Amazon) is leading with that !

This is great stuff, hopefully catch’s on, lots interest/investment in the states in this area.

Spent a very enjoyable summer in Toronto, heard about the farm work up north, but apparently the bugs/flies were eating people.Like any good paddy I had a union contact, got my card and build scaffolding at union rates.

I always knew you two would hit it off. Now it won’t be a perfect relationship but sexless marriages are way more common that you may think. Is this the first equal marriage on Broadsheet? I now pronounce you homophobe and homophobe. You may kiss me; cheek only.

    Where did Bisted’s comment go?

Some shower of propaganda maniacs moderating lately, if the monkeys don’t say what you want them to, shape and shave the comments to your liking…

    1. bisted

…hi Bernie…glad you noticed…I seem to be attracting a lot of attention recently…you and I and SOQ all know that my reference is a very old joke that only people in NI will get…

      1. Bernie

Hi Bisted, ahh I know, it was just a bit of comical banter, there was no harm in it. Depends who you are with the moderators, that’s for sure…

  9. Bernie

If this is another kidney stone situation (re: moody moderating) , JR, I’m offering my services, I’ve a fine pair of sharp tweezers, just say the word.
