This afternoon.

Scenes from Dublin Airport as  Minister for Transport and Sport Shane Ross (top pic) greets the women’s Irish hockey team after yesterday’s World Cup Final. The first time any Irish senior team in any sport had reached a world final.

A civic reception is being held at the Mansion, House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 City Hall, Dame Street, Dublin 2 later today.

    Ireland Over-50 Women’s hockey team _won_ the World Cup on Saturday.
    Ireland Under-19 Rugby _won_ the world cup in 1998

    Not to take away from the achievement though…

        First senior team, yes.

        Ireland reached the final of the U20s Rugby World Cup in 2016 (where they lost to England).

    Did Lord Ross mention anything about reinstating their funding that the party he props up took from them?

      he actually did. they’re putting 1.5 million onto prep for irish teams of any sport going into world championships, and he said a large portion of it goes to the ladies hockey team. theres a lot of sports, a lot of teams, that money won’t go far. and slipping in the bit about ladies hockey getting a sizeable portion of that, is just gettin carried away in the moment. it’s only being done because there’s election comin soon. it’s like ya have to get into a world cup final to get noticed and get some funding. they played that final having paid their own way.. being watched by Ross in the stadium, who got there on tax payers money.

      yea, like if Ross is guna give funding to a sports team .. hockey is the kind of bougie sport he would give funds to.

    I like the simple stripey t-shirt team look with the tasteful SoftCo logo. Such a change from the lame blazer and Louis Copeland 3-piece suit hell that cis male athletics sheepishly wear. Yes, you, Mr Una Healy.

    Unpopular opinion trigger warning:

    But there is a disappointing level of ethnic diversity in the team, but hey, we have Irish Athletics to kick the ass of that one. That’s middle class education for you. Hopefully hockey will become more widespread in the community with these inspirational role models.

      Questioning ethnic diversity at the top level in such a minor sport?
      What about GAA?
      Still not seeing much diversity there at the top level…

      that comment on diversity is ridiculous. we are a prodominantly caucasian country, there are a lot of sports, amongst the differect ethnicities in ireland, it’s more probable most will play popular sports, soccer, rugby, gaa. So amongst a minority, the chances are slimmer again of having talented hockey players amongst them. like, they aren’t keeping minorities out of hockey. do you want them to just grab some foreign nationals and force them to play hockey agaisnt their will, and put them on the team, regardless of being any use, just so you can look on and go “thats good to see” as the poor girl gets humiliated having rings ran around her.
