Great to see people so enthused about exercising their democratic right, whatever way they voted.
What was the turn out for Áras18 again?
the result of those US elections will have a direct impact on the voters as opposed to the result of our recent election of a President having pretty much no impact on the voters….apart from having to listen to yer man for another 7 years.
so an apples and oranges type of thing there really.
I’m well aware of the difference between the elections. That doesn’t make a low turnout any less disappointing.
disappointing for you perhaps.
I’d agree with jonsmoke. The Irish presidential elections are a non-event.
Lets wait and see the turnout for the next general election.
Yes, for me. I don’t presume to speak for anyone else.
:-)
Can’t help it Cian. I like elections. A low turnout is the realisation, again, that I’m a strange one in being so enthused about something that many find meaningless.
I got delayed in dublin the day of the election… I made it home, paid for a taxi I really didn’t have the spare cash for, was late for a dinner with friends, and still ran to the polling station with about ten minutes to spare.
My dinner was reheated in microwave :( …but I still voted :) Minor drama, I know, but I too think it worth the effort.
Good man Clampers.
MDH is our version of Gitmo, pity the folk that have to endure 1.5 hour speeches delivered in a faux accent as MDH tries to one up Noel Coward with pluminess…
MDH intersperses his absolutely not in demand poetry into lecturing diatribes, people tune out, their glazed eyes tell the real truth…
Wait a minute, the US “historical high voter turnout” is something like 47%
Forty-seven fupping per cent
Áras18 was 44%
Trump was right – people are so fed up with winning that they elected a Democratic House.
Why were the Dimms so confident?
Have a look at these two side by side maps/a> and draw you own conclusions.
Buckle-up Buttercups.
A boring dog and pony show.
So basically no surprises in these results, it is all as predicted.
The big news was that the social media companies are now working with the FBI to thwart interference from the Russians.
If only Facebook had done that during the Brexit campaign the Leave vote might never have happened.
I know loads of people who were completely undecided until they read a tweet that galvanised them into a decision they hadn’t been able to come to in the 15 months previously…
Ah stop Ollie, you put too much convincing power in a still unproven sway.
Yes, there was interference.
But not one shred of evidence has yet been given for that interference’s level of influence on either the Brexit or the US 2016 election votes being swayed.
Again, yes, there was interference, but how much did that particular activity on social media influence voters has still not been presented anywhere.
If it has, I’d love to be corrected, but I’ve searched plenty of times and seen nada, other than the pink haired lads’ claims, which of course he’ll say that, he’s touting his own so called genius… on an ego trip.
The UK report was inconclusive on the social media effects; the US report was full of claims without any hard facts, just talking heads saying Russia did this or that, but without what the effect or level of influence was.
Evidence my dear fellow, facts like. It’d be nice to have them, any, some, just a bit…
You realise I was being ironic ?
Anyway, factswise,Twitter has said that tweets from Russian accounts represented just 0.02% of all tweets during the Brexit campaign.
Facebook said Russians spent 72p on adverts during the campaign.

you’re confusing ironic with moronic
I don’t confuse capital letters or full stops however.
a limp comeback even by your standards
I very much doubt if the FBI would have issued a statement like above without good grounds Clamps.
It will be interesting to see what Facebook have to say once they have their analysis done.
It will be interesting, yep.
In other good news Carbon Tax supporting Republicans turned out toxic this election cycle.
