Short term solution. Kick the can down the road
@Dhod: if McCarthy can get the players to kick that can with vim, vigour and pinpoint accuracy, I for one will welcome our Barnsley overlord.
Seriously?
Could they not find anyone younger, or who isn’t a championship level manager?
Don’t we have championship level players?
if only
Managers that previously guided teams to the last 16 of the world cup are a little thin on the ground these days Grace.
I admire your optimism rotide but your faith in big mickey is misplaced. I doubt the players will be enthused at the prospect of his methods either. We wont qualify for 2020, let alone reach the last 16 of anything with him.
YEEES!!!!
At the moment we’ve got 16 first team players. My initials stand for Mick McCarthy, not Merlin the Magician.
It’ll be good to hear that flat,Yorkshire drone again after each game.
Good times.
Heh,heh,heh.
I can do a good Mick McCarthy impression, so I’m stoked.
No you can’t.
@Andy: no Yorkshireman in recorded history has ever been other than phlegmatic so use the loss of a beloved pet as an emotional touchstone in building your hommage to Captain Fantastic
Me pet ratter died. Ah went to t’ Woolpack for a pint.
See? Flawless.
‘Appen it were reet gradely.
Wor lass were greetin’.
I think I’ve slightly strayed geographically, but I’m sticking with it.
Aye, you’ve crossed over the Tees there, pet, but you made it your own!
Case closed…
Always worth another read at times like this …

They should have gotten that Dundalk manager from a few years ago who did so well in Europe with his team. Build from the ground up, coz thats where we are. Old Mac isn’t going to cut it
The reality is you need someone who understands the English game and at a level where we draw the bulk of our players from. As much and all as I’d like to see Stephen Kenny in post, he knows very little of the English game.
I was never Mick’s biggest fan but he’s the best option for us right now. Will be a lot more hands on with the team and will get some spirit back in the group. Which is the best we can hope for I think.
What do you mean by the “English game”? Football is football, and Stephen Kenny plays it the right way. On the ground, attacking. We can’t keep sending kids over to England, away from their friends and family, hoping they mature into good players. We have to invest in Irish football, in Ireland. We, the taxpayer, fund the FAI. And I’m sick of their behaviour.
We, the taxpayer, actually don’t fund the FAI
Yeah we do https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/national-league/the-fai-millions-where-they-come-from-and-how-they-re-spent-1.2264229?mode=amp
eh no we dont
from that article – annual income of around €37 million with public money less than €3 million. These figures are from 2013. Public funding has been cut while FAI’s income has gone up, so the % is even less now.
“In 2013 it received almost €350,000 from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, €42,000 from the Department of Foreign Affairs and €42,390 from the Department of the Environment. In its accounts the FAI says these funds were used “for the purpose they were intended”.
The FAI also receives public funds from the Irish Sports Council – €2.4 million in 2014, down from €2.8 million in 2013. “
What are you talking about? You’ve just copied and pasted exactly how they receive money from the taxpayer.
read it again, pee pee
I don’t understand your understanding of it. https://www.rte.ie/sport/other-sport/2015/0415/694285-7-4m-funding-for-fai-gaa-and-irfu/
Jesus you’re stupid…..
The FAI receive funding from the government. Are you pulling my leg?
Well i was rather hoping the team would develop into a unit that could play tight fast well organised football. This move has nil all written all over it. Again.
also, when has the FAI ever moved so fast to appoint a manager? tortuously slow every other time. looks like a cynical move to take attention away from delaney
I’m not sure how I feel about that at all now
Snap. Was it really too much to ask for someone different but with a bit of vision?
McCarthy gets the job because they need someone who has experience and can hit the ground running and get is through to the Euro’s in 2020. Ireland are due to host some matches for that competition so it will be a disaster if we aren’t in it.
Kenny would be the better choice for the long term prospects of the team and Irish football in general but he’s no good for the short term fix that the FAI want.
Get rid of John Delaney.
Gash.
I admire your optimism rotide but your faith in big mickey is misplaced. I doubt the players will be enthused at the prospect of his methods either. We wont qualify for 2020, let alone reach the last 16 of anything with him.
and Robbie Keane as his number 2? Please nooooo
