“Wrong On So Many Levels”

Last night.

Claire Byrne Live on RTÉ One.

Clodagh Hawe’s mother Mary Coll and sister Jacqueline Connolly last night called for a new and full inquiry into the 2016 murders in County Cavan of Clodagh, Liam, Niall and Ryan Hawe, to find out why Alan Hawe did what he did.

Four weeks ago, Mary and Jacqueline were officially refused their legal request for copies of the garda files from the investigation.

Jacqueline said:

“There was no initial support, I remember the Monday, myself and Mam trying to contact people and there was nobody there. There was no initial person with us on the day to say, you know, ‘this has happened’ and to take time, or anything like that.

“We were seeing things online, we were ringing our family liaison officer at one point to say ‘please tell me he didn’t kill her with an axe’. So it was the media that was informing us more so than anybody else initially.”

Two weeks before the inquest we got a copy of his letter, which was 16 months after it happened. Having to wait over a year, as we did, to have sight of the complete murder/suicide letter is wrong on so many levels.”

Jacqueline added:

There were bits and pieces of information and as you know we went through and inquest and the law for the inquest is very limited so we only find out where, when, how it happened and who it happened to but we never found out the why and we were advised that that probably would never happen at the inquest.

But he has said in his own words that he was caught red-handed and we do know that he was looking at pornography on the school laptop and he never brought the school laptop home. We’ve had sight of the counselling notes and he had said he was masturbating somewhere that he shouldn’t have been, possibly at the school.

So we have pieces of information but we don’t know who caught him. We don’t know why he was ringing the INTO, whether it was for advice for a grievance. We don’t know where it happened, when it happened.

We do know, in the June, he cancelled all his counselling sessions and this all happened the day before he was to return to school so it was avoidance of the consequences he was  about to face.”

Believing the murders were meticulously planned and not caused by depression, Mary said:

“I wanted to shout from the rooftops, that’s not the truth, that’s not what happened. We’ve been controlled since this happened by our decency, our sense of decency but it’s not easy to sit and talk about this but we just feel that people need to be aware of the truth and that is the truth.

We just need answers to the questions. You know, he was caught, who caught him, what was he doing, where was he doing it, why did he feel the need that he had to wipe out his whole family, what was so bad that he was doing.

Jacqueline said:

“Reading the letter it would seem that he killed Clodagh first and he sat and he wrote five pages about how he felt, and how the truth was going to come out eventually and he reassured us that if it was any consolation that they were happy.

And he then killed the boys and he came downstairs then and he wrote some more. And then he transferred money, and he went about his business while his family were dead around him, and he set out folders and wrote notes.

At about 2.30am that morning, he transferred about €2,500 from the joint account to his own account, so at that point he was a criminal and then he was fraudulently transferring money.

The next day after the funeral, we went to the graves and the horror of what we’d done, the stupor in our trauma, we had buried him with them.

We were initially told it would be no problem to have him moved but then we realised that the exhumation could not happen unless Alan Hawe’s next of kin applied for him to be moved. So we asked the Hawe family to move him. Eventually, they allowed it to happen.”

very very sad situation for all involved. Must of been hard to watch the media sensationalise that event with their usual gutter press approach.

hope they can somehow manage to move on with their lives

I always remember, after the details had fully emerged, RTE had murdering scumbags brother on telling the world about such a great guy he was and how talented he was at handball.

Like, really, this is what they put out? Guy literally chops up his family with an axe and they get the brother on to extol his virtues, including his sporting ability?

Jesus H Christ was what I thought watching it at the time, a view I still hold.

Now, if someone is described as “Pillar of the Community” I automatically think they’re a wrong un.

Same here; along with Daily Communicant, oh and the ones who touch-up the Ash-Wednesday blob on their forehead to keep it fresh for the whole day.
        (Anyone spring to mind?)

Sorry, on reflection, I shouldn’t have said that. We don’t go for mammies here. We’re civilised round here.

Heh, I was going to defend her but thought better of it.
No need to apologise, dear. I took it in the vile spirit with which it was offered.

Indeed. It used to be that if “you kept yourself to yourself” or you were “a bit of a loner” you had enormous potential to commit evil acts because the neighbourhood hadn’t had the opportunity to sus you out.
Evil lurks under many guises, folks.

Everyone knows that butchering your family is a barbaric and utterly wrong act. What people have a hard time understanding is how someone who was so well regarded in public life could be such a monster in private life. Hence all the pieces like you mention. It’s basic to humans need for understanding. RTE (and others) weren’t lauding the killer, as much as Daisy tries to tell you they were.

  3. Cark

The utter barbarity of this man. How he could confront his own kids and take their lives the way he did after butchering his wife first. The details of their deaths haunt me.

    1. Ian-O

Yeah that photography of Clodagh at the top of the page is particularly haunting.

Such a wide open face, bright eyes, hopeful expression.

To know that human being ended in such a way depresses far more than it probably should.

To then add the idea of three little boys suffering the same……..words just cannot express.

Could he have had a brain tumor like Charles Whitman, or a history of abuse? The scummy media , (and I include RTE in that for exploiting the living victims like this cheap emotionalism TV) are focusing on internet porno like it is connected to the killings. Last I checked, xhamster doesn’t have a family axe murdering category. Talk about old fashioned right wing puritan “values” still pushed by RTE and the rags. RTE used to be bad but its gotten far worse lately I’ve noticed. The reporting on those young fellas that died in that Donegal crash a few weeks ago was a disgrace. 90% of the words spoken by the on site news “reporter” was superfluous ranting do drum up emotion. That’s NOT the news. RTE obviously have a new mandate to copy TV3/virgin programming for low IQ couch potatoes but with the thin veneer of class that anyone with an once of cynicism can see through.

They’d have found a tumour during the post mortem. According to Clodagh’s sister, Hawe went with them to pick a bridesmaid’s dress for the wedding and evenutally he walked Clodagh down the aisle. The control issues were there from early on. Don’t try to blame this on illness.

      1. newsjustin

I heard about the bridesmaid dress. But not walking her down the aisle. Yes, it appears he was a control freak. With grand notions about himself being “too big to fail” and how his family couldn’t possibly get on without him.

Reminds me of that Simpson’s character who felt up Marge….Artie Ziff…
“Marge, I would appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone about my busy hands. Not so much for myself, but I am so respected, it would damage the town to hear it.”

What a failure of a human being.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

What is the significance of the walking down the aisle, please? I thought married couples did this.

          1. ReproBertie

Not to the altar. The bride is usually walked to the altar by her father or another member of the family to “give her away”.

    2. ReproBertie

“focusing on internet porno like it is connected to the killings”

Maybe you should ask why they are mentioning porn before deciding it’s a new wave of puritanism.

“He has said in his own words that he was caught red-handed and we do know that he was looking at pornography on the school laptop and he never brought the school laptop home. He was caught doing something and he decided his wife and children would be unable to live with the shame of it so he murdered them all.

      1. postmanpat

That’s not what I mean ReproBertie , I get it, he was caught playing with himself in the office or assembly hall bouncing on the trampolines? Embarrassing? sure, that’s no reason to kill your family and then yourself. Was is CP? Maybe? but probably not otherwise it would have been mentioned by someone. So, He was a ego maniac, and mentally ill. or “evil” if your an old fashioned small minded person that still believes in the bible. Case closed. I am criticizing the medias focus on crossdressing and porn browsing. Both of which I am a guilty off and I’m not ashamed to admit it . (Don’t knock it till you try it!) And I’m sure there’s plenty of tabloid staff and people in RTE that have had a peddle wearing women’s tights , but they put forward the narrative the this sort of behavior is somehow related to psychopathy. They aren’t explicitly saying it, but its there, the old fashioned undercurrent of rightwing puritanism that we KNOW is put out there by hypocrites. And the Church love it because it suits there agenda. Jesus ,some school teachers have a high and mighty view of themselves and zero self awareness. You’ve seen the family photos of Alan? he looked like a complete dork. We had no respect for my school teachers. everyone of them had a funny nickname. Everyone of them had a funny tick or quirk, but a lot of students grow up into professional jobs and become absolute hypocrite squares with amnesia about their old school teachers. I remember every single one of my teachers having some kind of mental illness, some where total nutcases with severe drinking problems. Christ on a bike . The fact that it took this long for one of them to kill his family with an axe is the real mystery.

        1. ReproBertie

“they put forward the narrative the this sort of behaviour is somehow related to psychopathy”
I think I get what you’re saying but I don’t see that you can blame the media for repeating what the family are saying, which is pretty much that he believed he was so important to their lives that the thoughts of their image of him being shattered by whatever revelations was enough to drive him to kill them. Nor do I see the media trying to link porn with psychopathy. From what I can see it was his own shame that triggered the planned murder of his wife and children, and the family want to know what he was so ashamed of while also dismissing the claims that he was suffering from depression.

That said, my exposure to the media’s coverage of this is quite limited. I didn’t see the Claire Byrne Live show and I only read the transcript on the Irish Times. I have no idea how the tabloids, who must be rubbing one out at the porn and cross dressing angle, are treating it.

      2. Spaghetti Hoop

The ‘shame’ of it? Which would indicates that the man had a conscience, an understanding of right and wrong and a sense of remorse for doing something which would bring shame to his wife and children.

So, to spare them the awful ‘shame’ he violently murdered them? That’s making him out to be some sort of martyr ffs!

        1. ReproBertie

I’m not defending this selfish cowardly murderer in any way shape or form Spaghetti. That’s what he was making himself out to be. His letter to the family included a request that they not forgive him, which was more self martyrdom.

          1. ReproBertie

Precisely. Depression was tossed around as a reason but they don’t buy it. They know that people know more and they want to know what these people know. I don’t see why they shouldn’t be allowed.

  5. Daisy Chainsaw

They’d have found a tumour during the post mortem. According to Clodagh’s sister, Hawe went with them to pick a bridesmaid’s dress for the wedding and evenutally he walked Clodagh down the aisle. The control issues were there from early on. Don’t try to blame this on illness.

I don’t care that he was wearing her underwear or looking at porn. Millions do that without needing to murder their wives and kids. He got caught masturbating in school while watching porn on a school computer. The threat to his standing and ego was what drove him.

    1. postmanpat

I see, so you think he was born with the “Hitler gene”? (simplistic scientific answer) or was just Evil? (simplistic Christian B&W view of the world), Still , starting tomorrow, I’m going to stop rubbing one out while wearing my wife knickers …just incase. Tonight is the last time I swear.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

Nothing so simple and trite. Maybe it was his own upbringing, maybe he was a sociopath all along but he wasn’t physically violent to his family and had ingratiated himself into the community as one of those highly regarded “pillars” so his behaviour was excused and tolerated for so long.

Nothing evil about a bit of cross dressing and manual relief in general. Getting caught doing it in a juvenile environment though?

    2. newsjustin

“The threat to his standing and ego was what drove him.”

I’d agree with that to be honest.

Maybe he had some underlying anxiety or depression. Or maybe he was a functioning psychopath. But I think Daisy’s point still stands up.

  6. Niamh

From the transcript of the interview it seems as if there are people out there – in INTO, in the school, who were involved with Alan Hawe, who found the porn – who know what it is he meant by that ‘thing’ he would be revealed for, the shame he and the family couldn’t take. Or at least someone. He was worried about being exposed for something worse than masturbating, it seems? Does anyone else get that vibe? Could it be the case that it is in someone/some people’s interests that this be kept quiet, because it goes further than Alan Hawe?

    1. John_Roche

The problem is, no one could have foreseen such a reaction from just that one event at the school.
