Can You See The Sky?

at

This just in.

Via Yahoo News:

Amazon.com Inc plans to build a network of over 3,000 satellites through a new initiative “Project Kuiper”, an attempt by the e-commerce giant to provide internet access, according to multiple filings made with the International Telecommunication Union last month.

The long-term project will cater to people globally who lack basic access to broadband internet, Amazon said in a statement on Thursday.

At least they’re not involved with the intelligence agencies.

Oh.

Providing satellite-based broadband internet access at presumably non-extortionate prices probably

€80 a month is extortionate? But no, let’s roll very expensive tax paid broadband out to every bog hole up every dirt track in the country because there is no alternative. Really?

That’s like a software developer arguing the need to design (and be paid for) an app when a browser on the phone to a website will do exactly the same thing… at no extra cost.

I shall rant further. If you need ‘high’ speed internet access in order to run your business then you are probably in the porn industry.

Otherwise- take control of your own connectivity and stop demanding that the rest of us to pay for it.

Frankly SOQ I have no idea what you’re talking about. I tried writing a response to you but I couldn’t find the start, end or middle of your argument.

            Yes dear.

different approach – their plan was to use fancy drones. yes really. they were gonna hoover up all that sweet sweet new African data to pay for it. shelved it in end.

what I can’t understand for the life of me is why anyone thinks sat based transponder system = acceptable broadband, it’s utter pants. and by jasus it won’t be cheap, building & launching sats are unreal money so I can promise you insane costs (mind I know some peeps who think shelling out €160pm on the oul Sly box alone is ok jasus wept)

15 Mpbs up and 2Mbps down with an average latency of 600 ms is a sight better than nothing.

And that is in Ireland not Africa where the weather conditions would be more favourable.

Really, How are Amazon going to keep Three Thousand low orbiting satellites in place
and organize seamless data synchronization then feed into a backhaul, maybe with
    300, but 3000 a different senario

High speed internet access is great, but it is not a food group. There is two separate user groups here, commercial and domestic. It is a modern myth that commercial needs high speed all the time because if they use thick instead of thin clients and employ local backup methods, slower speeds are perfectly adequate for most day to day tasks. Domestic for streaming etc is a want not a need too.

I spoke to a guy a few weeks ago who spent ten minutes complaining about how it hadn’t been rolled out in his area and how it was harming his business. TDs and councillors had been contacted. Except he could be connected right now if he wasn’t sitting around waiting on the state to do it for him. It’s not perfect but its a hell of lot better than nothing.

meanwhile, amazon has launched a games section in their warehouse computers in order to increase productivity and reduce the high attrition rate. The gamification of work, it was bound to happen.
