Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin

The Fianna Fáil leader said that if his party came to power before the contract with the government’s preferred bidder was signed it would not go ahead with the deal. It would instead set up an agency within the state-owned utility company to deliver the service.

Hurrah!

However, Fianna Fáil would not bring down the government over the scheme, which is expected to cost taxpayers €3 billion and provide broadband to 540,000 homes and businesses.

Oh.

I am shocked to see there are just two lobbyists – TG4 and Screen Producers Ireland – registered on the public register who lobby on

    (1) matters involving public funds

    and

    (2) communications

You’d think with a €5bn broadband contract up for grabs, there would be strenuous lobbying.

To answer that question, you would need to scan the regulation of lobbying act 2015 and note how they define lobbying.

You could also have a quick look at the registered lobbyists – you might note that charities seem to make up a disproportionate number of them, for some reason.

Paddy’s a bit of an arsehole but hes not wrong here. The whole thing stinks to high heaven, its ridiculous that the opposition parties aren’t calling a vote of no confident in the government on it.

And it is ridiculous that none of the mainstream media have pointed out how he who must not be named is set to benefit from this deal
