Traditionally a lot of castles in Ireland were plastered on the outside with a lime-wash finish. Nothing unusual here.

What they appear to have done is restored the appropriate lime dash plaster to the exterior, which is how such stone work on castles and the like were protected from the elements for the guts of 2 millennia. It’s just that the stuff falls off over time, and modern folk are used to looking at olde worlde gaffs without it, because it wasn’t maintained on them.
